Earning money - barman missions (all on tier 1 maps shouldn't be hard), you can take up to 3 at the same time to speed up the process. Next, encounter quests - get them along the way while travelling (there are easier and harder, randomly popping in time intervals, follow the exclamation mark on the map, and remember they will not appear until you are lvl 3). You can take it, and if it is too hard type, just ignore it and leave the area until you take a different one.
Next, you can mine rich asteroid field, derelicts etc. Regarding radiation nebulas - if you are to go into one of them, either get some nano scrubbers equipments items to occassionally clean radiation, or invest in stronger shield module with at least +6 radiation defense (that will prevent radiation buildup in weaker radiation nebulas, or decrease speed of buildup in stronger ones). Note that, when you destroy derelict in a nebula, first stage destruction of derelict will add more temporary radiation, then just put some distance to that new cloud and return when it dissipates... More money earning ways is crafting, if that's your thing, entering shipwrecks and asteroid caves if you find them etc...
Now, figth against Ravena - when you are better level, have better weapons, then make sure to equip your slots with enough repair nanobots and shield boosters (like mana and health potions). When you attack her - evade fire from her cannons, try to get behind her and target lock her when you're closer - that will reveal capital ships weakpoints, and if you destroy these, she will go down much faster. Also, missiles of "torpedo" types are best against capital ships. Alternatively, light weapons of "cannons" type have by far longest range and you can snipe her from distance.
In the end, you can also change difficulty in options during the playsession any number of times you want, if you want it.
I could speak about many other things too, but I hope this is sufficient to start with...
