Dwarfheim did not sell enough copies.

Pineleaf Studios

– 100,000 players worldwide said they had us on the game wish list when we launched Dwarfheim worldwide in September last year. Only 30,000 bought Dwarfheim.

Despite the downturn, Søvig says that she is proud of what the team has achieved. However, she admits that the project may have been too ambitious.

– We launched a game many said they wanted, and we refined it further according to the wishes of the players. But then there is the fact that there is fierce competition. We wanted to revolutionize the game genre and it was perhaps too ambitious. We stand for it anyway. We are proud of what we have achieved.

Pineleaf had ten employees – down from 19 in 2020 – who were all laid off when the bankruptcy petition came in. At the same time, the company has a total debt of 6.1 million. John Aksel Stav from Bjerkan Stav Advokatfirma has taken on the job as trustee, and will assist both employees and creditors in ensuring that they get what they are entitled to.

How do you go $6.1M into debt? What bank/financial backer even allows that?

My wish list is to keep track of games I MAY want. Generally if they are on sale. I would not use it as an indicator of sales, and would only assume half of the wish list would actually by a game (and that is a generous allotment).

Case in point, I only just bought this game on sale for 66% off.

Doesn't matter how many people have a game on wish list it's never a guaranteed sale. They show interest in a product not their desire to immediately buy it. If they pre-ordered it prior to launch you would have a much better comprehension of how many people are inclined to try it post launch. Refunds are always a possibility even in early access for a number of reasons.

I had this game on wish list for a very long time, but like many early access games I try to avoid purchasing something that's unclear on how well the games are being developed. Watching recent reviews over periods of time always kept me on the fence. There were obvious issues, and the community were eager to voice their concerns which hurts sales.

Although I'm not sure how a indie company can go in 6.1m in debt.. to me that's either fraud or complete incompetence to reach such a stage. I worked for a software company that went into a 1m debt over the course of it's life.. so I have an idea what could contribute to that.. but over 6m? what the... what were these people doing? It makes absolutely zero sense to me how any company could go that far deep in the hole. It honestly kind of pisses me off that this was managed like this. What a waste!

This really sucks. I was excepting to see more cool awesome updates from the game but sadly since the studio is down and you can't even play the game due to errors and crashes. The Great Dream of Dwarfheim is gone like most other great rts games........

They did not have 6.1$ million in debut, but 6.1 million NOK (~700k USD).

I thought it sell well enough. It's too bad we didn't get the full campaign mode for Dwarfheim. I'm hoping atleast the Company comes back to update the game. It's probably the best dwarven game out there in terms of rts games.

the game was half baked at best. Then it released into 1.0 and was nowhere near complete. People are getting burned out of early access games, more and more are waiting until the 1.0 update and looking at reviews.

It's the only rts game featuring Dwarves... and didn't you read the article? They went bankrupt. The company does not exist anymore.

I think it's misleading to mark a game as 1.0 release when it is not finished.
