What is the Big Metal Ball/ Waves absorber?

Me and someone else are thinking that it may be artificial water pressure due to the way your character explodes in a very similar fashion as when you would die of water pressure in Barotrauma. However it melts your skin, and its also referred to as a "reactor". We're confused, any ideas?

If you read the comic that comes with the supporter DLC thing, you can get some context. No real answers, but a glimpse of the bigger picture.

In short, the comic explains that there was a huge disaster where ocean water started boiling and killed tons of wildlife as well as some unfortunate divers. You get to see a guy get killed by that phenomenom and the process is very similar to what happens when you swim too close to the waves absorber while it's active. Again, no big answers, but some helpful context.

Thanks, Me and friend were thinking that the waves absorber was a tool used to keep something in our out (we guessed in). Glad there wasn't anything I missed.
