How to disable d-pad movement when using a gamepad?
This is such a bizarre problem. It looks like it is impossible to unbind the d-pad buttons for movement. So, when using the default control layout for Halo CE for example, every time you hold d-pad down for push-to-talk, you also move backwards.

This is so silly. Why would d-pad movement even be enabled in the first place, since movement is already handled by the left analog stick?

wait what? that's how original Halo 1 worked. are you using one of the Universal button layouts? those shouldn't have this happening

I am using the default control layout. The original Halo 1 didn't have push-to-talk mapped to a d-pad function, but this version does. How are we supposed to use push-to-talk if we can't unbind movement from the d-pad?

huh, you're right, this is happening with every layout I've tried, even the universal ones. What's funnier is that d-pad up is flashlight by default.

Another kinda funny thing is that setting "D-pad and buttons" to "Swapped" lets you move with ABXY.

I think it's due to them re-adding the d-pad movement from the original game, but accidentally applying it to all control sets, combined with adding the new remapping options. Either way, it's definitely unintended, and I haven't found a way to get around it.

Well, this is worthy of submitting a ticket[support.halowaypoint.com].

EDIT: One way of getting around this issue is by using Steam Input to remap the D-Pad to the keyboard equivalents of these buttons, but I'm not sure that would work in matchmaking due to the input locking (the game not allowing KB/M input when using Controller, or vice versa).

I opened a ticket. This is how it went.

Hi Ratirefure,

Thank you for contacting Halo Support.

After reviewing this with the development team, it has been determined that having the Move Forward, Backward, Left, and Right buttons set to the D-Pad by default is by design. These actions were included in the new gamepad rebinding feature so that players can recreate control layouts that were available in the original release of Halo: Combat Evolved.

These actions cannot be left unbound, so they must be assigned to a button on your controller. The Universal Button Layout options all assign non-movement actions to the D-Pad, however, non-Universal Button Layouts remove many of these overlapping bindings. Using a non-Universal Button Layout for Halo: Combat Evolved will reduce instances of normal gameplay actions resulting in unintended movement.

Yeah they don't give a ♥♥♥♥. They apparently have a Discord server[discord.gg] though, and encouraged me to voice my opinion on the matter there. I don't use Discord, but feel free to do what you will with this info.

Thanks for trying at least. They obviously don't understand the problem. Unfortunately I'm not on Discord either.
