How bad is the hacking really?
Was thinking about reinstalling this on my new rig. I heard about the multiplayer being plagued by hackers?. Is it only a small amount or is it CoD on Xbox 360/PS3 kind of bad?

Its not terrible, I have met a few and u r more likely to match them in ranked at higher levels. The populations near death makes this game near unplayable however as every match will see u with a bunch of newbs or AFKers vs a team of try-hards. It probably wouldn't be that bad if Microsoft would make it so that the Steam version can connect to the Console versions for online games, but that would require a couple of programmers to work for a full weekend. Maybe even 2, and we can't afford that ♥♥♥♥ man.
What are you talking about crossplay is already a thing?

Not too many hackers. In 4v4 matchmaking it's more just coordinated parties who will make solo queue players have a nightmarish time finding a game that isn't a pubstomp, though I wouldn't doubt if there are some suspicious players in the mix. That said, seems like the couple of times I run into hackers were mainly on custom Halo 2 and Halo 3 games with the BR + Snipers as your starting weapons. Gotta be real sad to cheat in custom games there, or really cheat in general.

Oh wow. I have seen posts in the past saying it wasn't a thing, or that it doesn't work, or having connection issues, keeps d-syncing, etc.

But if it is a thing then my god Halo is effing dead. I thought crossplay wasn't a thing and thats y the population was so small; but man the population is effing pathetic. U know, for several games that used to pull in over 100,000 at 3 am EST U.S timezone.

You can't actually see all the players, obviously.
It's only going to count the steam ones. The steam version, which only released relatively recently in comparison to how long MCC has actually been active.
The true playercount is unknown.

I have my suspicions that it's smaller than one would expect overall though, everybody says they like Halo but nobody actually wants to play it. If it didn't have crossplay you would find no one, it has been a very long 10+ years. Halo as a game has regressed to being niche like all the other classic PC games.

as for multiplayer problems, with crossplay on I have only found AFKers, and Halo has always been a tryhard game, just turn the acceleration up to 6 and you're good.
I have never played without crossplay, so the rest I cannot say.
I've only seen two, and they were in a same game of Rumble Pit. They were literally flying across the map shooting people. I managed to kill one of them with a shotgun, that was fun. They fly around like bees. Maybe there are other, more subtle forms of cheating (that I can't detect), but the blatant cases are very rare.

I've only started playing again last week after many years of not playing and I have only encountered 1 dude making elephants fly in sandtrap

Y'all are talking about kids, not hackers. Little boys who download outher coders' scripts. It sounds like the OP is having a "you" issue; cracked gameplay is rare in MCC Multiplayer, even with crossplay. Do not call them hackers; they are not—it is disrespectful of what hacking truly is.

Mnk will never be able to compete with controller play in HALO.

I've played 100+ hours and haven't seen ONE hacker. Isolated incidents?

seem people with aimbots in cgb sniper servers. I haven't seen a lot of super blatant cheatrers like invincible flying dinos but there are a few closets that use wall/radar hacks.

I kinda do that all the time though. The bullet magnetism is so damn strong you may as well not even use the keyboard on social games.
