Is Reach supposed to be brutally difficult?
I was always a PC player, so my experience with Halo only went as far as CE, never played any of the others until now.

I only just finished Reach on Heroic and man was it difficult, probably among the most difficult games I played. Is it known for it's difficulty or something?

Mostly Halo 2, the jump in difficulty in Reach is more from normal to heroic compared to heroic and legendary. Obvious changes include the addition of enemies like the extra phantom that drops stealth elites behind hunters when trying to defend Jun's position in Nightfall.

I've completed the game on Legendary Solo multiple times, but it basically boils down to "Zap 'n' Bap or Get Tapped", or more specifically: Grab a Plasma Pistol (Maybe a Grenade Launcher if you've got your timing with the EMP Rounds in check) and keep a Magnum Pistol, DMR, Needle Rifle at your side for most of the Campaign if you want to even make noticeable progress.
While the good old "Zap 'n' Bap", "Plasma + Headshot" or "N008 C0M80" is the optimal strategy for most of the games, it's practically the only viable arsenal here as a lot of weapons in Halo: Reach become more disadvantaged (Even the Spartan Laser may need to two-♥♥♥♥ or even three-shot what it could once one-shot), if not outright useless in the face of the modifiers for the game's Legendary difficulty that make both enemies much stronger & you much more fragile.

Two mods I know of that both detail what makes Halo: Reach on Heroic & Legendary so... restrictive compared to other Halo games as well as address it in their own ways would be The Vengeful 'Vadam's Halo: Reach Evolved (Videos for earlier versions of the mod go into more detail) and Ruby of Blue's Ruby's Rebalanced - Halo: Reach. Unfortunately, none of these mods can yet be played with the present version of The Master Chief Collection (The Vengeful 'Vadam's currently completing the soon-to-be-released v1.0 update for Halo 2 Uncut and Ruby of Blue is within the latter half of mission renovations for v4.0 of Ruby's Rebalanced - Halo 2).

Yeah the DMR and Needle Rifle were basically my primary weapons for the entire campaign. The Assault rifle does pitiful damage even against grunts and can't hit the broad side of a barn and the shotgun is the "Look how they massacred my boy" meme. Even the magnum is pitiful compared to how it is in CE.

But honestly the game isn't that troublesome, except when they had enemies that could insta-kill you, be it the sword elites randomly charging you and your assault rifle can't even take his shield down, or elites with the fuel rod gun.

I don't think the noob combo works on legendary if you have the mystic skull on, a fully charged shot only took away like 2/3s of an elite's shield.
Am I crazy, or are dropship turrets so much more disruptive and annoying to deal with than the other games? You just get melted instantly by these things if you try engaging enemies anywhere near them, and they tend to remain threatening even while they're going away by still sniping on you

Incidentally, they make heroic firefight matchmaking for Reach much less fun than it should be; because you constantly have to respect these big ships enemies primarily spawn from, and trying to engage in anyway besides sniping just gets you killed immediately. It just feels like you're not allowed really fight in firefight.

Legendary solo was a pain, but possible. You used to be able to dual wield in the original version which was taken out, but a few enemies still can.

uh... what? Not sure how you remember it but Reach never had dual wield in the first place.

I'm playing on the Legendary difficulty of Halo Reach. This difficulty is ridiculous. The enemy's shield is too hard to break, and the only thing useful against that shield is the plasma pistol. So, from start to finish, you'll lose a weapon slot just to carry the plasma pistol, and the other weapon slot has only two best choices: DMR or Needle Rifle. Therefore, almost throughout the playthrough, the player's experience with other weapons is severely limited.
I'm playing on Normal with my friend, and it's incredibly easy. Only time I died was from my friend's reckless driving hitting me, and even then the respawn and magical medicine of the lore meant I was back on my feet in moments.
I think it's probably the easiest on Legendary. Beat on Legendary solo back in 2010 on X360. There are so many portions you can just skip as well. Halo CE, H& Halo 2 are definitely the hardest on Legendary.
The game is fine on legendary, the MCC port is just sorta weird because AI behavior gets more aggressive as the framerate gets higher.

Its been a bug since it was introduced to PC and 343 never fixed it. Same issue affects the rest of the MCC.

playing at 30 fps is the best way to preserve the balancing of the original game until modders can fix it

That's funny because my laptop is so bad I'm basically playing under 30 FPS most of the time.

Because its the honest truth. if you look at my comment history, when i say skill issue. its usually because the person whos creating a new post is crying that they got stomped on by 20 year veterans when all they play is fortnite

I literally played CE for years after it came out on PC. All I'm asking is why the campaign is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
