What is so good about Reach?
Honest question by someone who only played Halo 1 about 15 years ago, both on Xbox and PC.

I loved Halo 1 and naturally I was hyped for Reach like everyone else, but decided to wait for reviews and bug report. So I only watched some friends play parts of the campaign and the multiplayer and I honestly can't believe that there are 9 years between Halo 1 and Reach. Sure, the graphics are better, though outdated a lot even for a 2010 game. It has the sword from Halo 2. And... that's it?

Same guns, same vehicles, same controls. Which doesn't have to be bad, because you know exactly what you get. But the only actual addition I noticed is the new campaign, which is, judging by the first 3 missions only, absolutely terrible. It seems to me like the typical spin-off game released after a year by a company who wasn't involved in the original game, but with better graphics.

Maybe my memories of Halo 1 are wrong too, but I honestly want to know for what reason I should buy Reach instead of waiting for Halo 1, which seems to be a better game, by far. 99% of Steam reviews are "It's Halo so you have to buy it" and "Omg nostalgia", so they don't help at all.

I like it but it's definitely not up to par with halo 1, 2 or 3.
Still fun to play though and it's halo in it's core, i just expected a bit more from it.

Just get the full MCC and get everything for less than full price of a modern game?

Reach certainly isn't the best one, I'm personally really waiting for Halo 2 and 3 to come out on this. But you can't beat the deal of 40$ for all 6 games.

Halo 1 is still the best game by far.

Halo Reach is like Halo 1 but easier, way slower, and with tons of terrible gimmicks and pointless guns piled on top. You ever want to have temporary invincibility, or deal with weapons getting immensely inaccurate if you fire them too fast, or deal with people using camo off-spawn?

No? Well...too bad.

Frankly most people left in the community are like teenagers. They don't actually remember anything before Halo 3 so they think that and Reach are the best things since sliced bread.

Just wait for Halo 1 then, it sounds like you're not going to like it no matter what. It was just the next Halo which meant a new player base and new reason to play. Its just like why people get excited for Call of Duty every year, its a new game to play. There were also 3 other games between 1 and Reach, its not like it was 9 years until the next game.

If you want to find real reviews then go searching, Steam isn't the only place to find reviews.

In terms of story, Reach is obviously not Halo 1-3. Staples of the franchise such as the Master Chief, flood, etc are not present in the game and those things are part of what made Halo so great. Reach was designed for already existing Halo fans thus "you already know how it ends", not necessarily for newbies.

That being said though, IMO Reach's multiplayer and forge system are an all around upgrade over the previous titles.

TL;DR If you want story, then yeah maybe wait for Halo 1 to release. If you want multiplayer then get Reach as it's better.

Reach has some new features like armor abilities and invasion gameplay mode.
However the best thing about Reach is Forge. Forge is like a scenario editor for the game.
They are going to add forge later as an update.

Keep in mind that Halo 3 is still officially the best Halo game ever made.
Some features from Halo 3 were removed from Reach, like dual wielding.

Reach was Bungie's last game in the Halo series before they left for Destiny and 343 took over. It's more grounded and forward-thinking than the original trilogy and goes for more for a "war story" kind of experience than previous games in the series. It also changes some of the meta in multiplayer, namely dual-wielding and changing out the burst-fire BR for the semi-auto DMR and the addition of abilities like sprint and jump-jets. IMO, it was the best Halo for online MP and has a bunch of memorable maps.

The campaign is solid, though the voice acting didn't exactly age well, and I would feel bad for anyone experiencing it for the first time with the audio issues present.

Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3 all had some natural progression in storyline and gameplay. I dont think they spent as much time or effor on Reach, or something was going on behind the scenes to cause a disruption because its definitely a flawed game from the masterminds that Bungie used to be.

Its like the first 3 black sabbath albums. Classics, each solid on their own but a clear line of development can be seen. Then Vol 4 came out and you could tell something was up. Well, inner turmoil started and a LOT of cocaine. I think this is similar to what happened with reach. something was going on and they didnt have the same groove.

Halo 3 added the equipment, but it felt fluid and useful. In reach, its cumbersome and the jetpack only has a little squirt of juice that basically is like an extra jump. None of the other attachments really work as intended or well. They definitely arent useful when the other team is spawn killing you.

And the first 3 built up relationships with characters and with the audience. These people are supposed to be "Noble Team", this proud team but weve never heard about them before. Its just "ok everyone so this team is Noble Team. They are REALLY COOL. Like them". If they would have been introduced, even slightly, in the lore of the other games then it would be like "OMG so THATS what Emile looks like. I rmemeber the story about him in that one mission on halo 2" or something. But their story is JUST in reach and never extends to even halo 4.

Its not a good prequel. Even the Star Wars Prequels used characters we knew about and added to them. We learned what young Kenobi was like and even saw his mentor. We saw what young and teenage anakin was like. there was a direct connection. Reach has maybe one or two strands of connection to the other games (i wont list them to avoid spoilers) but it just felt lukewarm. Thats why i was so disappionted that they started with Reach first and not Halo CE.

However, as much as the story and multiplayer is lacking, Forge is brilliant. Theres so much potential to make maps and such, that i was SO pissed when i learned it wouldnt be available at launch because to me thats the huge draw for Reach is its custom content making abilities.

(Metallica would also work in this analogy).

Nothing is good about Reach, many serious players quit or skipped Reach. Aim bloom/armor lock/jet packs added so much rng and get out of jail free cards to people the game sucked. The kids enjoyed Reach because of said crutches and the good players not playing Reach lol. I believe most of the serious players moved over to COD because of how bad Reach was.
