I mean wtf did we like back in the day? Scorpion and Sub-Zero were just the same guy with a different shade and different powers that were loosely considered as related to their shade of color. Johnny Cage and Liu Kang started out as basically the same guy from different parts of the world with different stereotype backgrounds.
There's an OG bias that runs through these things to the point where I was surprised people liked Erron Black so much. People said Meitenkun and Shun-Ei were ♥♥♥♥ but I thought they were decent. Gotta admit Ivy is one of the more interesting creations in Injustice 2 even if I haven't played her very much.
When you consider how derivative (disappointing?) some of the returning females have been borne out to be (especially in aesthetic design), it really does put a rather Injustice-y focus on (at least) the game's females combatants...
