Report a translation problem
They need to lay down on a bed in the hospital before it heals up naturally as well to get checked.
Major injuries can appear in other tabs (missing limbs for example) but minor ones can end up being nearly invisible in the dwarf's interface until diagnosed.
I always setup my hospital early on or when there are some severe injuries after a fight so I have not encountered what you describe, sorry.
But yeah, brewing or cooking poisonous ingredients can be fun in a very dwarf fortress way.
