Monster hunters
Hey everyone,

Several different monster hunters have joined my fortress. However, when I click on anything outside the citizen menu they are not found on any of the lists.

They did mention they where joining to "fight monsters." Is that all they are willing to do? Would be nice to put them in a squad.

They can participate for citicenship after a while if thats your question. But at the moment yes there staying to room arround your caverns and slay monsters.

Monster hunters are a weird category, they go into caverns to fight on their own if you let them, but they don't become citizens normally.
You need to get rid of their special labor (monster hunter), see the wiki for the detailed steps:
https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Monster_slayer#Removing_their_Monster_Slayer_Labor_Location

Basically, they are more like NPC adventurers that want to fight monsters in the caverns and don't really care about anything else, so at best they become long-term residents and you can't do much with them if you don't force them to no longer be monster hunters.
They are not that good at fighting most of the time and their equipment is usually so poor they would die if sent into the caverns as they are, making them weird visitors overall.
They can be a nice easy source of iron if your fort doesn't have any, but generally they are a bit superfluous because your own dwarfs once trained are far stronger and better equipped as well and leaving an opening to the caverns or at least not one that is air locked with gates is dangerous.

Apparently there is a way to give your long time residents jobs. In this case, danger janitors, lol.

I accept all monster slayers, even the lousy ones, and let them do the exploring and getting hurt while keeping my caverns completely open without micromanaging or walling off everything. I treat them sort of as a mobile, more survivable version of disposable livestock that I use as a cavern early warning system. They already saved a few of my citizens by becoming meat shields or bought time for my cavern squads to deploy to rescue citizens in distress.
