what to do with caged enemies
hi

I have run into this issue a few times, I slowly build up a stockpile of caged enemies- goblins and other ne'er-do-wells. But if I try to remove them from the cage to dump them in a pit or execute them or whatever, they very quickly attack and often kill or maim the cage-opener whom is not usually a military dwarf.

Any creative ideas what I can do with these miscreants, and how to dispose of them safely?

When the creature in the cage is hostile, it's better to open the cage remotely, using a lever. Build a lever and link it to the cage, then pull it.

As to what to do with them, there's a world of creative possibilities (the most fun of which typically involve magma).

I like to put my cage stockpile right next to my animal pen. Keep your war animal breeders there and should your dwarf get disrupted and release the goblin early your war animals will happily eat him. I do make sure to take all items away from said prisoners first so no animals and dwarves are harmed in the dispatch of hostiles

Definitely disarm them first.

1) Use the dump tool over all the cages with armed hostiles

2) Go to the stocks menu and remove dump from all cages

3) Use the unforbid tool over all the cages with armed hostiles

You can strip them naked and take their stuff by using the unlock-lock tool (right end of the bottom toolbar).

After getting their stuff you can do:

- dump the cage in lava, smash is under a drawbrige or dump it from a high place.

- station a melee squad next to the cage and let them loose, for some live practice.

- place them behind fortifications or bars, attack lever to the cage and release them, to use as live target practice for marksdwarves

- use them for defense. put the cages in a defensive place, attach levers to the cages and release them if you get attacked by undead or some monster.

Just incase you dont know how to disarm a prisoner, set up a trash dump close by make sure its the only one or the most convenient so the dwarves dump the items there and not anywhere else. Then select the designate to dump trash can icon and select all cages prisoners then click on each cage and tell them not to dump the cage itself. Do this for each prisoner cage. Then your dwarves will start taking items. Then just unlock the items and enjoy

You don't need armed squads or levers. Make an storage area for "animals" 3 X 3 at the center a pit over a well some z levels deep. take the goblinite like has been said, put a hatch over the well, it need to be locked. then select the pit and choose the volunteer to be dunk then a dwarf will come and push him. it is better id the walls of the well are build or polished, If you deselect "empty cages" for this storage a dwarf will take any empty cage.

Put chains near your barracks for some live training. I keep a dumping zone set up on magma for easy clean up after
