[Solved] New issue with workshop mods, Jan 23rd update
With the release of adventure mode I decided to install the game again and give it another go. After playing for a bit I decided to start a new world with mods, I went to the workshop and installed a few mods and then started the game to generate a new world but there was no mods option on the main menu. I checked the new world screen and sure enough I didn't have the option for mods there either. After some looking around I saw a thread about linux users having to copy their mods from the workshop download folder into the local mods folder inside the dwarf fortress root folder, I did exactly that and now the mods show up just fine.

TLDR; Mods downloaded/installed in the steam workshop folder are not registering on a fresh save and have to be copied to the mods folder manually.
This is on a fresh Windows 11 24H2 with no prior settings/configs.

EDIT: Instructions

To install mods you need to go to your "steamapps/workshop/975370" folder and copy the folders there into the "steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress/mods" folder. Once you do you will be able to use the mods ingame.
Also keep in mind that if you are going to delete a mod it also needs to be deleted from the "Dwarf Fortress/data/installed mods" folder too, this is not required but if you want to clean your mod list of mods you don't want anymore you can do it. Also I want to stress that you probably shouldn't ever delete a mod that you are using in your save as that would likely break things in that save.

Same issue with me on Win 11 23H2. Also tried it with DFHack to see if it picks it up but the mod menu is just gone.
Same issue today tried to reinstall but no mods showing.

they now download into /steamapps/workshop/(whatever number is associated with df)

put them all into the "mods" folder in the dwarf fortress root.
Don't know why that happens, but it worked when doing it like that.

putting them directly into the "installed mods" folder didnt't work for me

I'm not sure why they made this change in how mods work. When I played a year ago or so it worked without a hitch but this new process is a pain in the butt. Hopefully someone from Kitfox or Bay12 will see this but I honestly don't expect it to be seen, I just wanted to bring it to the community's attention so when people try to play with mods they at least have some idea of what to do.

Hi, I think I found the reason -> see my post here

  • Open Steam and go to your game library.
  • Right-click on the Dwarf Fortress game.
You should see a small pop-up window with information about the game installation (this is the same place where you can select the beta branch).
  • Go to the Workshop tab.
In my case, I found one item that had been removed from Steam, leaving an empty entry.
  • Click the trash icon next to the empty entry to remove it.

I checked and I didn't have any blank mods in my subs but thank you for posting the info, hopefully it'll help someone.
UP for visibility. Needs to be fixed

Today's update seems to have solved the issue. Thanks for the bumps everyone!
On Linux it is possible to create a symbolic link, very practical and easy.
ln -s path_to_folderID_content_workshop path_to_dwarf_fortress_mods_folder
