World Generation Tips?
Hey guys, I've been messing around a lot with World Gen, using tools like PerfectWorld, and digging into the advanced options too.
Would be great to share some great tips or interesting settings!
There's of course great options like turning off eroding extremes, and weighting elevation for more cliffs etc.
I'll look forward to learning some more tricks!

A big one for me was discovering the "cavern openness" option (hope it's called that).
There is a min and max setting. Upping the mon setting makes caverns way bigger with less corridors.

I'm also messing around with perfectworld, so I'm interested in reading so.e tips too :D

im so glad you asked. it seems theyve updated worldgen slightly, more is shown on the map, i didnt know that change had occurred.

these are to be pasted (in the correct format - look at the others already in the file) in the world_gen.txt file in your PREFS folder in your DF STEAM folders.

14 to 15 has extremely minor variations, these were honed over a very long time
16 was honed after a very long time

its one giant continent, but its very fully featured. lots going on and to do and interact with. there are many civilizations and usually at least one major river. it's supposed to 'have everything' and for all of it to be able to interact with one another (no isolated pops on a separate contient/island unable to be touched by others)

if you want worlds with 'everything going on', here is an example that took a long time to figure out. it feels 'balanced' and 'rich'/'full'

seriously i spent so much time in worldgen, i dont mind oversharing haha:

my opinion is erosion is good, and naturally forming rivers are good. so i never force river #. im mixed on volcanism as well.


Also, theres NO POINT in my opinion to have more than 1 continent currently. your civs will never interact, itll just waste space and slow things down.

so i usually have worlds of the 65x65 (small) size, because these allow for one pretty massive continent that can showcase just about every possible biome configuration.

because i force rivers via rainfall etc, my worlds are not super deserty. i could work on that

but my crowning achievement THE THING I THINK YOU SHOULD OBSERVE:
lack of swamps and not an over-reliance on hills.
generating natural rivers (majors even) while also sporting lots of grasslands and not getting too swampy took me hundreds of hours lol, its worth checking out. one big continent that kind of 'looks real'

study the biome chart
master elevation levels first, the rest makes sense if you can understand how elevation levels work. they determine more than anything else, followed by rainfall. it's been a while since i 'got it right' (for what I wanted at the time) and have been playing in my world since.

it is so incredible creating a world that 'feels real', was randomly generated, but has basically everything to do so you dont feel like you are missing out at all. if anything you are a little overwhelmed with all the options to choose from

someone had questions in a different thread about 'Chosen' in Adventure mode. You can play as more races! It just requires the correct conditions to exist in the world.

Try my worlds out, let the history run for at least 100 years and 200 if you can stand it (sometimes you see a civ collapse and its sad tho haha), i promise if you give my worlds enough time you have more options to choose from as 'Chosen'

Interesting post. I Had no idea world gen had so much it could effect in game start, setup, and play. I thought it effected just the world and not fully the player experience. Now I am interested in trying out alot of worlds to generate, to see what kind of experiences I can get. Might be more fun than playing, generating and seeing the experiences and character creation changes.

In your worlds above I added them and tried them out and can't select Chosen as their end up being no religions. What needs to change for religions to appear so Chosen Will become available??? Also, is there a place that has what all the parameters do? I looked them over briefly and some seem more obvious and some not so it would be nice to find out precisely what they can effect so I can start generating worlds that have all sorts of experiences... I wanna try out as many civilizations and races as I can get in one world for chosen and lots of beliefs and alot more occupations and homes and other character creation options and don't know how to do that...

If anyone else has amazing world gens to submit, created or found, I would love to try them out and see what experience I can get from them. Everyone who can should submit some, this could be fun...

I had nerfed my world! yes, they were too violent and it was not 'good' enough yet

Also, is there a way, during world gen but before saving, to see what types of stuff was generated like chosen races or occupations and homes and beliefs and such. If not it should have that so that you can decide to keep the world based on what the work product it is creating is...

Lots more good on the map! Evil gets held back considerably.

I also had 5 (FIVE) options for 'Chosen' mode.

the Usual 4, and something called 'Paddleheal's hand'... a large feathered humanoid. A night creature with a curling trunk?

Playable as chosen?????

Ugh sharing screenshots on Steam is a chore.

itll take me a little while (when I care to do it), but i'll post it here later today or smth.

i'll give the story of this current world you got me to generate. the first screenshot is from year 36, next is year 238. This world had a major river so I stuck with it. The world got pretty evil - but I got a humanoid feathered night creature chosen run out of it, so whatever!

I am a Chosen feathered humanoid with a trunk. But, i come from elfdom civ so i only had wooden stuff to work with. I spent all my points in items then realized Pets was an option...

IF YOU EVER SPAWN IN ELFDOM LOOK AT THE PETS!!!!!!!! I missed out LOL. I had just spent so much on upgrading (wooden) armor and didnt feel like redoing anything. But I could have chosen Giant Tigers, Giant Crocodiles, war gorillas, etc etc... ive never really used pets but those sounded decent

so glad you said something, im doing the chosen mission right now - armed with wooden weapons against a temple of enemies as an ivory-feathered humanoid nightcreature with a trunk :)

Here is one I created. It is as slow as I can stand at the full 500 years it is set for, which is pretty fast, and generates a reasonable fast island with lots of stuff in it that loads fast.

I Haven't gotten it to have the variety I wanted of occupations and beliefs and home areas, but I Have had some success with getting other races as Chosen, than standard; so that is a bonus. It also seems relevantly peaceful for adventure...

If anyone has suggestions to make it generate better variety or more peaceful, yet keep the interesting generations it seems to create, I would love to hear what to try out or do with it that won't slow it down. If something to change would make the generations I am getting more interesting that would be valuable to know... I am also interested in how to make it more heroic and legendary, which I am not sure I captured that would also be of interest...
