Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

World simulation games like this
Dwarf Fortress' world history generation seems to be unlike anything else I've ever seen.
It makes everything feel like it happened and happens for a reason, not just that its scripted to have happened. creating heroes and legendary items that have real histories and affected the flow of the game world to where it is now.

Are there any other games that come close to what Dwarf Fortress does in its dynamic worldbuilding?
I'm hoping this is a genre I've just been missing and that there are more games that do this.

There's nothing that comes close and honestly nothing that can, but a few things come close to coming close. I hate to say it but HOI4 kinda does, as well as :steamfacepalm:rimworld:steamfacepalm: to a degree
Ultima Ratio Regum is the only one I know.
While none of those are at the level of Dwarf Fortress's complexity for world-building, these are the games I know of that are similar—assuming you're only interested in Fortress Mode:

  • Clanfolk
  • Elin (to an extent)
  • Kenshi
  • Gnomoria (check out Ignomia instead)
  • Norland
  • Odd Realm
  • Song of Syx
  • TFM: The First Men
  • Ultima Ratio Regum
Caves of Qud has a similar thing. There's a static over world map but then it generates histories for all the groups of mutants living in the world. So, one play through, you might help the plant people by murdering a monkey who killed one of the plant rulers; or you might find some art depicting an old king or whatever. Things like that.

I'd look at roguelikes if you're interested in procedural storytelling.
