Dwarf Fortress

death by junk
this may seem a dull question, but how do you avoid getting dwarves killed when mass dumping? I lost 3 in the last 10 minutes because they'll step into the dump itself and get wrecked by thrown trash. I tried marking it as a no traffic zone to no avail, excluding it from the burrow but then a dwarf without burrow restrictions stepped into it and died. Is making the dump itself physically inaccessible the only solution?

Just physically close access to where the stuff falls with a bridge/door linked to a lever that you pull.

A question would be "why do you insist in mass-dumping into a hole?".
If it's just about dumping things, a single tile on flat ground (and no hole next to it) is just fine as well, dwarves just place down the items and there is no risk of harm.

If it is to specifically send items down to a specific level (metal goblinite to be smelted for example) then closing off the place temporarily is definitely the safest bet, usually you would want to also make sure to mass-transport the items out of that tile (set that tile as a stockpile and use minecarts for example) quickly between two dumping sessions would be a good idea as well.

I set it up like this because it works mainly and several dumps I designated in the past in whatever place without an adjacent slope/hole stopped working after a while.

I tried putting a grate on top because the description says it allows passage of items but actually it won't let most go trough, so no luck yet. I don't want to design an elaborate system to dumo stuff just now, I just want all trash in one tile out of sight

There is no reason for a dump zone to ever stop working. You have a problem elsewhere, not with the dumping zone.

Most likely something to do with jobs or pathfinding.

Minecart into magma pit. Dump zone for when I need to dump things manually. So far no deaths ever over multiple fortresses from either falling dorfs or magma mist.

mm with magma there's no issue since they won't step in there ever, I am having this problem with a dump far from magma but I see you somehow transported it to level 45, I don't know how to do that though

Magma-safe minecart > collect magma from source > use stockpiles with wheelbarrow to transport to topside stockpile near pit > put minecart on track stop set to dump into pit.

nice! Unrelated but are you doing 60fps with 400 dwarves? How do you accomplish this I have an I7 4790k @4Ghz and doing 10 fps right now

Nah, the counter jumps when the game is paused. I'm doing 12 FPS with 400 citizens, a dozen visitors, hundreds of animals + a handful of prisoners.

Are you dumping into a pit? i never had problems with 1 tile and 2x1 dumping zone thats a bit over the pit if you dont have magma you can build a bridge down below to smash things.

yes it's a pit, well I've not marked it as a pit zone, would that prevent dwarves from stepping in it?

So many people waste their trash.
Just make a weapon out of it. A mechanism so you can launch it at any intruders.

I control my dwarves movement with 1 huge barrow and the colour arrows for movement red minus discourages them stepping on that tile.

As said above, that doesn't work
Fel Jan 3 @ 5:36am
If the higher cost for that tile doesn't work it usually means that they are specifically going to that tile, not as part of a path but as a destination.
Since it's the bottom of your dump hole, you probably reclaimed/unforbid some of it and dwarves are going to grab items there.
