Dwarf Fortress

Dwarves stuck in jail long after sentence completed
I had a load of dwarves on long sentences for hauling forbidden items up to the trading post. I was counting down the days. Anyway, after the time was up I saw they had not been released. I found that the fortress guard position (you set the squad leader and the whole squad take the role) was vacant. So I set my 3rd squad to take on the job. They released a few of the guys.

But a week later and many more who are finished their sentences are still languishing in jail. I tried deleting the jail. That didn't work. I tried stationing the squad and then releasing them. That didn't work. Any ideas?

Maybe make sure your captain of the guards is not occupied with something else since he is the one in charge of the jail business.

The Fortress Guard is kind of contradicting. They only do guard stuff when they are off duty except for the Captain of the Guard. And the COTG will transition from Soldier to COTG to do their assigned job then transition back to Soldier. So when you put that squad on orders, or full time train, they don't do fortress guard stuff like investigations/apprehensions. The Captain will but the rest won't. MOST of the time you can have them on training because the COTG will do almost everything. They won't stop barfights either way though because you have to catch the barfight right when someone reports a crime, which is generally long after the barfight has cascaded.

I tried a few things. I uninstalled the cages and then reinstalled them. I uninstalled the cages and then set the prisoners to be released to the pasture I had set up. But they go berserk and kill people when they are led away to pasture.

I'm bored with this fortress anyway. So I will simply restart.
