Is it better to dye thread or cloth?

That way cloth is made all the time, it's then dyed when they have dyes, and everyone's happy.

Debatable. In early fortress, that means more workforce involved. Might not be helpful.

Also, if you go only with dyed thread/cloth, you may end up in a situation where you have all the cloth you need, but no bags to mill the dye into, so no dye, so no dyed cloth, so no bags.

It does raise the value of cloth, and clothing made from it, which makes your dorfs happier - though again, masterwork undyed clothes will still do so.

Early on, I wouldn't bother.

If you mean "I'm already planning on dying stuff, should I dye the thread or the cloth?" I'd say that it honestly is pure preference. But I -think- (not sure, THINK) that it's more efficient to dye the entire cloth than it is to die each thread, since I think it takes the same amount of dye for each item, but it costs multiple threads to make 1 cloth. This MIGHT be outdated or erroneous info because I honestly almost never bother with dying.

One thread = one cloth.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

personally i just dye cloth, since all the thread gets auto-woven eitherway and cloth gets stockpiled. both option are equally efficient, too, so its better to dye cloth and set workshops to use dyed cloth only.
Hi, ready for the final say in this discussion? You should ALWAYS dye cloth, over thread.

dyed CLOTH has a bonus value modifier that correlates to how good of a job your dwarves did dying it (finely dyed, masterfully dyed etc.)

Dyed THREAD does not.
I'm afraid to say you cannot dye thread and try to rp out a dearven denim making factory :c
