How far will traders travel?
So my fortress I've set up in a valley surrounded by mountains, there's some human settlements and goblin pits outside the mountains but hovering my mouse over them says "Area is inaccessible from your location" does that mean I'll never be able to raid or travel to those places and that their traders can never reach me?

Tried googling it, wiki isn't clear. It seems to imply traders can cross the impassable mountains but you cant?

Traders can reach you when you have their civ listed on your embark screen.

I believe they mean when you are on the world map picking the place to start your fortress.

On the side of the screen it should show the neighbouring civilizations, not sure what criteria are needed for being a neighbour, though than 'not too far', I assume they are suggesting that if you don't see a civ on this, they won't be sending traders. (I'm not sure this is actually the case, I just think it is what they mean, I don't think its 100% correct, but a good rule of thumb though)

Not sure that there is anyway to see this info once you have actually started your fort though.

This screen lists your neighbors, that are able to send traders/invaders to you:

if caravans aren`t showing up you can always send 1 dwarf to demand tribute . nothing happens if he fails but should trigger caravans.

That is 100% how in works, if a civilisation doesn't show up on that list then they functionally don't know you exist and wont interact with you at all, there are ways to bypass this after embark but for embark its a good thing to remember.

If you're completely surrounded by mountains to the point that anywhere in the outside world inaccessible I think its pretty much functionally the same as starting on an island, a screenshot would be helpful as without one we can only guess.

That's a really cool piece of geography but yeah you're 100% blocked in, the little rivers don't block movement but lakes and the big rivers like the one to the north do so you're locked in there.

A spot like that is pretty good to safely learn the basics of the game but it can get boring pretty quickly without any way to interact with the outside world, my recommendation for a decent embark is don't be isolated(obviously), have access to your parent civilisation, have one friendly neighbour and one hostile neighbour nearby for maximum fun.
