battle of the north wall
hi
just wanted to share-

My second fortress ever- Sackpeaks just had a massive battle. It was earthshattering.

We have been sieged by goblins about 5 or 6 times now. One of the most recent the goblins came in force and asked for a parley. I agreed. My mayor/leader went out to meet them and THEY KILLED HIM ON THE SPOT. I was so angry I couldn't go to sleep IRL.

This most recent siege they returned with numbers. 80 armed goblins in total.
I am not that adept with siege weapons and traps yet, I have been training 4 squads of 36 dwarves in total for some time, and we met them in battle at the northern wall outside my fort.
Absolute slaughter unfolded, naturally. It was very difficult to keep track of what was going on.
The goblins eventually won the battle basically, the field by the wall is completely red with blood and bodies, weapons etc are stacked up. Some dwarf soldiers were not present- a couple were absent for some unknown reason, and a couple were wounded.

I thought it was over for my 180 pop. fortress.

Somehow, the remaining goblins (many wounded) sort of fanned out chasing down livestock etc.
I scraped together the straggler dwarves, only 3 were able of body, one had a crutch and was hobbling along behind. But the 3 managed to hunt down and kill the remaining goblins.
The siege was broken.
I can't believe it.
I have no idea what to do now, there is a mountain of corpses, teeth, weapons/armour. No doubt half the population is traumatised to near insanity. How on earth to deal with engraving memorial slabs for 30+ dwarves, and burying them.

Anyway, I need to go to bed IRL, that was nuts.

I am accepting advice and/or prayers.

If you also get your large sieges most of the time on the same spot then you should start constructing the mother of all atomsmashers. This works best if you can dig or chop resources around that spot and choose "use closest materials". This takes quite some time, especially when there's a lot of stuff in the way. So start building it immediatly after your last siege. Once they arrive you queue up "pull lever" a dozen times or more and click the exclamation mark for urgency.
To bad you didn't post a screenshot.

Hell yeah, great story. Love these.

I'd mass forbid everything, then go into the stocks menu at the top and unforbid the dwarf corpses. If you build or have built coffin/casket/sarcophagus you dwarfs will automatically drag everyone over to be buried (You might have to put am unassigned tomb zone over each).

Any gore outside can be left to decay while you shore up a couple defences and give everyone time to relax and recover from the trama.

Yeah it's an endless series of hilarious calamities. I encourage you to try the free version on bay12games if you haven't and are on the fence, not as good as premium but it's still the same game so you could get a feel for some parts of it without paying if you'd like.

Theres also some hilariously tragic down falls. My last fort ended in the first year. Just as the first migrant wave showed up, a named Giant Sparrow and 3 minions wreaked havoc on my expedition team. Killed my one hunter/xbow dwarf first, then proceeded to pick off the other dwarves as came to the surface to help fight (on their own). I ignored the fight alerts at first, because the hunter had been chasing a giant fox around up until that point.

But when the dead body alerts started, I stopped to see what was happening.... then another dead body... then another... then another.... 8 of the 13 dwarves dead in span of 15 seconds. It wasn't until that point I realize they weren't fighting a fox, but a bunch of fliers. I had to abandon it, because I don't think it would had been able to recover with those things around.
