Rotten liver: will it kill my dwarf?
I had a severe and continuous lapse of judgement when I sent my chief medical dwarf into the caverns to chop down tower-cap trees with no military around... he got bit by a helmet snake and was just barely saved by my knights (two dwarfs in leather armor and copper weapons), I ended up telling some random farmer to do surgery on him because nobody else had any skills. Well, his upper body and liver was rotten. The farmer managed to remove all the rotten tissue from his upper body, but now my doctor is running around with a liver in "advanced rot". Is he just marked for death at this point?

If anyone else is wondering about this, I'll be sure to post if he kicks the bucket from it.

For any other creature, losing their liver means they'll no longer be able to drink alcohol.

For a dwarf, nothing actually happens (at least, as far as the 0.47 version of the game goes; 0.50 mightve changed it).

You should be fine. Maybe. Unless it gets infected.

I assume it's necrosis (localized) from something equitable to a "rattlesnake bite" -

It should not kill it, but you're better off building an hospital just in case your doctors feels like excising the rot because right now, you're doing an anxiogen coinflip of "Will my dwarf get the mother of all infection".

I'm surprised your dude is so fine after being bitten by a helmet snake, I just checked the above mentionned link and those are not the jokes I tought they would be (and that comes with someone who somehow ends up breeding and farming black mambas one fortress out of two).

Yeah it wasn't. Somehow he got lucky and the helmet snake missed any important internal organs. It's severe localized necrosis. If it was otherwise, he'd be dead as a goblin.
