or perhaps you did over fish XD
and now have to wait for the babies to grow up
You will still have something to fish (vermins, they are infinite, like mussels for water).
Even a pool you create deep underground will have vermins. Might even get fish (I had some in one made out of aquifer).
Is there any known formula or metric to how fish spawn or populate?
But dwarves will prepare and eat water vermins just fine. In fact, mussels are good becasue you can use the shell for cheap crafts :D
I'm not even getting vermin, actually. I stopped getting those awhile ago too. My fish count is rapidly declining. Soon my food supply will too since not much is going in but the fish reserve.
Going to have to learn to hunt real fast.
Also, put everyone herbalist and gather lots of plant on the surface.
Food in DF isn't a concern unless you are on an evil glacier where your freshly processed meat want you dead and the outside ground is made of empty ice.
maybe you can trade for a breading pair?
tho it may take a while for them to get started. I like to start with 3 fem sheep and one male.
along with 2 cats and 2 dogs... which are also food :P
farming can be annoying at first, but as long as you have spaws/seeds, you should be able to get started right away... just watch out for a few settings, such as 'cook seeds' and make sure you dont let barrles into your seed stockpile XD
was talking about other ways to get food when theres no fish?
-hunting
-passive cage trap hunting if you ahve agitated animals
-farm (either outdoor, indoor or both)
-herbalist job and gather food outside (unless it's a desert type biome)
-trading (might lead to issue if you don't have caravan for some time)
-open the cave. See herbalism above, but in the cave
-open the cave, then close it again to be safe. Maybe big area in "dirt" or put water on floor to add mud. Wait for cave stuff to grow everywhere. See herbalism above
-have some egg laying animals. If you don't, cage trap and tame some.
-bred and kill animals
I think that covers it ? Quite frankly food is not really an issue in DF when you know how it works. In my fort I stopped the farms because I had too much food.
I don't know if this is true. The indoor fishing spot has to be connected to something though.
