Fish Extinction?
So in the early years things where great at Claw clasped, fish where plentiful and we where drowning in shell crafts we sold for a good bounty for many seasons and years.

However the last few seasons have provided almost no fish whatsoever.

What's going on? Did Claw Clasped's greed for fish exterminate the species in the area? What decides if a river or body of water produces fish or not?

could be seasonal or random, I've had fish turn up in small ponds that were barren before. :/

or perhaps you did over fish XD
and now have to wait for the babies to grow up

You can overfish. They'll come back though.
You will still have something to fish (vermins, they are infinite, like mussels for water).

But what if I dont have any river for mussel and I wanna fish for easy food?
Erei Dec 20, 2022 @ 11:52am
You always have vermin. You will never run out of mussel or whatever vermin they fish once the "acutal" fish is gone.

Even a pool you create deep underground will have vermins. Might even get fish (I had some in one made out of aquifer).

Is there any known formula or metric to how fish spawn or populate?

Under the hood, probably.
But dwarves will prepare and eat water vermins just fine. In fact, mussels are good becasue you can use the shell for cheap crafts :D

I'm not even getting vermin, actually. I stopped getting those awhile ago too. My fish count is rapidly declining. Soon my food supply will too since not much is going in but the fish reserve.

Going to have to learn to hunt real fast.

Hunting and fishing are nice on the side, but don't rely on them too much. Learn how to farm underground and all of your food problems are gone.

I dunno, I get basically infinite food as soon as I start fishing^^

Also, put everyone herbalist and gather lots of plant on the surface.

Food in DF isn't a concern unless you are on an evil glacier where your freshly processed meat want you dead and the outside ground is made of empty ice.

I tend to always take animals with me when I plan to embark without a river, just in case there is no serface water.

maybe you can trade for a breading pair?
tho it may take a while for them to get started. I like to start with 3 fem sheep and one male.
along with 2 cats and 2 dogs... which are also food :P

farming can be annoying at first, but as long as you have spaws/seeds, you should be able to get started right away... just watch out for a few settings, such as 'cook seeds' and make sure you dont let barrles into your seed stockpile XD

I had a bunch of fish spawn in an underground pool made from an aquifer. So I'm nearly certain they don't breed, they spawn.
Guided Dec 22, 2022 @ 11:02am
???? who said fish breed???

was talking about other ways to get food when theres no fish?
Vettig Annikske Dec 22, 2022 @ 11:13am
I trade all my goblinite and golden statues for food and steel stuff
Erei Dec 22, 2022 @ 11:36am
Other ways to get food without fish :
-hunting
-passive cage trap hunting if you ahve agitated animals
-farm (either outdoor, indoor or both)
-herbalist job and gather food outside (unless it's a desert type biome)
-trading (might lead to issue if you don't have caravan for some time)
-open the cave. See herbalism above, but in the cave
-open the cave, then close it again to be safe. Maybe big area in "dirt" or put water on floor to add mud. Wait for cave stuff to grow everywhere. See herbalism above
-have some egg laying animals. If you don't, cage trap and tame some.
-bred and kill animals

I think that covers it ? Quite frankly food is not really an issue in DF when you know how it works. In my fort I stopped the farms because I had too much food.

From what I understand when a dwarf goes into a fishing spot fish will spawn there. So even if you put a dedicated fishing spot indoors, a dwarf fishing there will magically cause fish to appear.

I don't know if this is true. The indoor fishing spot has to be connected to something though.
