How to set up a forbidden zone?
Ive got a problem on my map... i have a waterfall and my dwarves (and visitors) seem to like to path through it and either get severley injured or die :/

I cant find any solution to stop my dwarves walking through this when theyre out doing their tasks. Is it possible to create a forbidden zone?

I appreciate that wont stop visitors from throwing themselves into the waterfall, but surely theres a way to stop my guys doing it!

Look into setting up the pathfinding to a high cost (hit Shift+T to bring up the menu) to move through that zone. If all else fails, wall off access

Ill try the Shift T

Walling it off is totally impossible i would need 30 click high walls about 100 squares wide (i have to wall off an entire cliff face basically). And most of the dwarves will path through it and die while building it... it really is a weird geological phenomena... and very dangerous!

Be aware that pathfinding, even red with maxed value doesn't mean forbidden. To explain how it works, to find a path somewhere, the dwarf calculate a score. Crossing a regular tile is 1pt for example, while crossing low depth water is 5 or something (I made the value myself, for the example purpose, I don't know them from the top of my head). The pathfinding tool change the value of the tile it's applied to, so that it cost 50pt instead for example. A dwarf will always pick the least costly path to somewhere.
If there are no other path, or the other one are more costly (likely, much longer), the dwarf will still happily run in the red area.

Waterfall are an issue because the water at the edge drop, and as such, the depth is low (enough for dwarves to walk and not swim). But the dwarf don't understand it will push them over the edge to their death.
To prevent the issue, you need to build a roof over it (like a bridge) and make sure they can't access underneath said bridge. I did an overhang over the waterfall itself to prevent the issue. I made fancy floor grate so my dwarf can still look below the waterfall (it's for RP, dwarves don't care, although they like the mist that can come through).

This is exactly whats happening :(

They walk halfway up the waterfall then try to cross it and get punted off into the river below... i have like 10 injured dwarves in my hospital :(

Shift-T didnt work... they still try to take the same stupid route...

Do as I said I wall it off completly. I had to do it to.A bridge over it with an overhang will prevent them to go underneath.

Could you like remove it by lowering the terrain in the higher part of the map?

I dont see how a bridge helps me in this problem.

They are trying to get something thats halfway up the waterfall. My fort is at the bottom and the waterfall is way above me on one side on a very steep cliff. trees are actually growing under the waterfall, yeah its weird. Theyre trying to get stuff thats basically halfway up the waterfall and they walk from the bottom up to about halfway and then turn to cross right through the water. They then get knocked down by the water falling from about 5 squares above them.

Like i also said... its way too dangerous to try to build anything around this waterfall cos my builders will be dumb enough to keep walking into the danger zone...

you can forbid items in the falls. the items they are trying to get.

use closed padlock button on all items in the falls or river.

middle bottom menu, its the one on the far right, it has 4 icons

tho, I would also recogmend some kind of bridge in the cases that they must cross the river for items not in the water

Ive worked out theyre trying to get bees to fill hives... ive tried to ban Beekeeping but they still carry out beekeeping duties :/

The bees arent listed as an item on the item list :*(

Ive built bridges above and below the waterfall... theyre trying to get somethging INSIDE the waterfall. Its very difficult to describe the very unique geography i have on this map... there are trees growing INSIDE the waterfall about 20 squares underneath the river.

They dont wanna cross the river, they want whats inside the waterfall.

They can still wander through. I had the issue with the traders.
No issues since I walled the waterfall, as long as they can't access undearneath by the "fall" part of the waterfall, they shouldn't get underneath.

ohhhh, can see why you dont want to give it up.
you might have to dig a way through for them, or take away your hives :/

there is a way to prevent others from foraging, but I dont know if this will help much.
I do think beekeeper is a job title, maybe you can make a custom job and put 'no one does this'

if you dig behind the waterfall you might be able to build a floor around it and use grates so they can walk through, but that would depend on the fall having a drop and not slopes.

you could also dam the fall, personally, I'd not want to try it, but maybe you could build over the river and then take out the supports blocking the river :/
then open it again once you have things sorted out.

that is a VERY extreme way to handle it tho XD

thing with this game, there are SO may ways to solve something.
think there is a lava mechanic that makes obsidian when mixed with water, a bit like minecraft, its been used to punch through aquifers.
again another EXTREME way of blocking water XD

sounds like you have a beautiful area. its likely that beauty might need paying for with some if not alot of effort :(

Not sure if it can help, but hives don't need outdoor access. They need to be in "outdoor" terrain. Every piece of ground which is exposed to the outside at least once will stay "outdoor" forever. You can dig an area, put a roof and you have an "outdoor" area indoor.
