No wood and rocks to be found?
Well, loose rocks in the landscape, but you can't do anything with those to start building a workshop.
You need wood or rocks to build anything anyway.
After the 2nd underground level it was water everywhere with the staircase construction.
A caravan I missed and possibly rocks or wood logs could have been bought to keep eating and drinking and have a place to sleep to survive longer for the dwarves to try to set up forestry (how to set up?)
Possibly stones also for crafts to make for incoming caravans ( 1 per season ) could provide needed resources
Could no longer keep the fort running and the dwarves did not survive,

No rocks to be found?

What???

Either dig into a mountain or dig down. There are millions of rock right below you.

As far as wood you need to embark in any area with some wood. Not doing so is a game challenge you put on yourself if you choose not to.

Unfortunately, first there was an aquifer layer ( how many layers can this consist of ?) that I had to mine through. (not done)
This does require wood again !

Aquifer layers are random. You can have a lot or a few. They are not even on all the map. You can have an aquifer there, but none a dozen tile south.

If there is clay on the map you can collect infinite clay boulders from one tile.

"The gathering and use of clay is done from a kiln or magma kiln and behaves similarly to most material production, but includes elements similar to glass production. In order to gather clay, a gathering zone must first be designated over a clay-bearing tile (note that clay can be collected from adjacent clay walls, even diagonally), much like with sand; however, gathering clay creates a clay "boulder" (the same as raw stone) and does not require a bag. These clay boulders are stored in a stone stockpile and may be used to build workshops and constructions, but constructed clay floors cannot be used in place of natural soil. As with sand, clay can be gathered indefinitely from a single tile - any dwarf with the item hauling labor enabled can collect clay. "

Thanks, going to use clay I haven't thought of that yet
I suspect that collecting clay via 1 tile will involve a dump zone?

Totally random then scattered over the surface and in the depth as a layer .
Have tried 2 times now to get into the depths with a staircase, but an aquifer blocked this .
And had no luck finding anything on the surface in different directions for a passage to deeper layers to get into the rock layers after the embark
If you go out with the standard embark supply of goods, it could soon become deadly for the dwarves in an inhospitable environment without trees and water

It's a clay zone. You have sand collecting and clay collecting. You need a kiln to add the clay collection.
But if you dig down you have literally the entire earth for rock. Aquifer can be punched through no problem, just dig down. If it's cancelled, dig again. To prevent water issue downstair, smooth the aquifer or remove it and put walls instead.

You have an aquifer. You have infinite water. And dwarves HATE to drink water, they drink alcohol. It's only real use beside emergency is for wounded (they don't drink alcohol, and to clean wounds).
You can make a well yourself using the aquifer. keep them around and make a 2z level tall reservoir. The "upper" level of the z level at the level of aquifer you use. Then, above all that, make a single hole in the floor and put a well. You'll need bucket to clean and give water to wounded.
Something like that :
*
--+--
7////7
8////8
------

*is the well, on top of + the hole with - being floor, 7aquifer and / empty space (the reservoir). 8 is random wall (aquifer or not)
Eventually, the empty space will fill with water.

But yes, if you embark on a difficult biome you need to prepare carefully. I suggets to always "prepare carefully", but even more so on a more difficult biome.

Eventually, you only need wood for bed. Everything else have an alternative without wood. And you can buy wood from traders or find it in the cavern. You can even grow it yourself by digging a several z level tall area underground with soil.

when you start look for a site where your embark rectangle has squares WITH and WITHOUT aquifier, that way you wil always find a way down. just remember what part of your embark point had the square without.
Erei Dec 21, 2022 @ 1:07am
Aquifer are non problem, unless they are heavy and I haven't seen one at all in this version.
Grimmrog_SIG Dec 21, 2022 @ 1:10am
indeed, if it a light one you may be able to tell your dwarfs to gather and pout out the water.
Erei Dec 21, 2022 @ 1:25am
You just smooth/put wall and no more aquifer.

Why does everyone wall of the light aquifer?
I just let the water run downstwairs. At the very bottom I channel a tile to the side for a water gathering spot and the rest can flood the layer. It evaporates very fast and results in a nice mist.
Erei Dec 21, 2022 @ 1:33am
You have better ways to make mist generator and water from aquifer can pool down up to 7/7 over time. While it does have its use, it's not what I want in my main stairway.
Also, a tile that was "dirtied" by water will stay dirty until the end of time, which is annoying IMO. You need to "floor it" but floor look different than natural floor.

I get your points.

This can be a way to get through the aquifer layer quickly if you want to save wood in an embark environment without trees.
It is assumed that the dwarves left with the standard embark goods for the wagon.
