What???
Either dig into a mountain or dig down. There are millions of rock right below you.
As far as wood you need to embark in any area with some wood. Not doing so is a game challenge you put on yourself if you choose not to.
Unfortunately, first there was an aquifer layer ( how many layers can this consist of ?) that I had to mine through. (not done)
This does require wood again !
"The gathering and use of clay is done from a kiln or magma kiln and behaves similarly to most material production, but includes elements similar to glass production. In order to gather clay, a gathering zone must first be designated over a clay-bearing tile (note that clay can be collected from adjacent clay walls, even diagonally), much like with sand; however, gathering clay creates a clay "boulder" (the same as raw stone) and does not require a bag. These clay boulders are stored in a stone stockpile and may be used to build workshops and constructions, but constructed clay floors cannot be used in place of natural soil. As with sand, clay can be gathered indefinitely from a single tile - any dwarf with the item hauling labor enabled can collect clay. "

I suspect that collecting clay via 1 tile will involve a dump zone?
Totally random then scattered over the surface and in the depth as a layer .
Have tried 2 times now to get into the depths with a staircase, but an aquifer blocked this .
And had no luck finding anything on the surface in different directions for a passage to deeper layers to get into the rock layers after the embark
If you go out with the standard embark supply of goods, it could soon become deadly for the dwarves in an inhospitable environment without trees and water
But if you dig down you have literally the entire earth for rock. Aquifer can be punched through no problem, just dig down. If it's cancelled, dig again. To prevent water issue downstair, smooth the aquifer or remove it and put walls instead.
You have an aquifer. You have infinite water. And dwarves HATE to drink water, they drink alcohol. It's only real use beside emergency is for wounded (they don't drink alcohol, and to clean wounds).
You can make a well yourself using the aquifer. keep them around and make a 2z level tall reservoir. The "upper" level of the z level at the level of aquifer you use. Then, above all that, make a single hole in the floor and put a well. You'll need bucket to clean and give water to wounded.
Something like that :
*
--+--
7////7
8////8
------
*is the well, on top of + the hole with - being floor, 7aquifer and / empty space (the reservoir). 8 is random wall (aquifer or not)
Eventually, the empty space will fill with water.
But yes, if you embark on a difficult biome you need to prepare carefully. I suggets to always "prepare carefully", but even more so on a more difficult biome.
Eventually, you only need wood for bed. Everything else have an alternative without wood. And you can buy wood from traders or find it in the cavern. You can even grow it yourself by digging a several z level tall area underground with soil.
I just let the water run downstwairs. At the very bottom I channel a tile to the side for a water gathering spot and the rest can flood the layer. It evaporates very fast and results in a nice mist.
Also, a tile that was "dirtied" by water will stay dirty until the end of time, which is annoying IMO. You need to "floor it" but floor look different than natural floor.
It is assumed that the dwarves left with the standard embark goods for the wagon.
