tame vermin - safe from cats?

i have a bit of a cat population in my fortress, and a human caravan recently offered me a tame blue jay. naturally, i snatched it up as soon as i saw it.
however... i'm worried for the safety of my new jay. is it safe for me to let it out of its cage before it's received an owner? do cats hunt tame vermin?

I don't think cats kill fort vermin.
Just like dogs will fight with wild animals, but not domesticated ones (unless they're crowded)
Could be wrong but 90% sure.

They do, I tested it with a random vermin I caught in the caverns just to be sure. Keep them separated (pastures, walls, locked doors, butcher's workshop...)
