Prevent dwarves from falling through magma stations?
I had a dwarf fall through a magma smelter. It seems that the magma smelter's and forges previously unwalkable tiles are now walkable, which means that dwarves can fall through them and critters can (and have) come up from the magma when previously they could not. Is there a new way to prevent dwarves from falling through the smelters?

Edit: Moral of the story is to plan ahead. Technically the dwarves could still fall through with the answer given, but mine only fell in because he got in combat with a fire imp and that problem is solved with this method.

I've not had it happen, then again I brought magma up and only channeled directly below what I thought looked like the bright tiles in this version, I'll keep an eye out tho thanks for the heads up.

yeah I put my channels where the old impassable blocks used to be but it doesn't stop magma crabs or people falling in anymore

how do you know he fell through the magma smelter?
You can use wall grates/fortifications to block critters - if all tiles are walkable now i dont get why one would fall through and if its just visual the old way should work.

You only need 1 hole for magma (whatever). Everything else can be solid and it will still work fine. The hole need to be under the "forge" looking part of the sprite.
Most of them look like that :

The * being the needed hole to magma. That's for potter, glass and smelter. Smith station are different for some reason :

If you only do one hole, they won't fall into it. I have seen critters move up through it, but only once in classic, so I think they can but it may be very situational (like only when someone is smelting or something).
Fire snake are vermins and they just "spawn", irrelevant of magma access.

I have noticed that magma crabs, imps etc can come up through what were previously solid tiles in classic magma forges. I haven't had any dwarves fall in (yet), crossing fingers lol.

He fell through the smelter while fighting a fire imp who came through. You cannot use wall grates because you cannot construct furnaces/smiths on top of grates, and you cannot construct grates under pre-existing furnaces/smiths.

I am aware and have constructed the magma smelters and smith in accordance with your diagram. Also the creatures that have come up are magma crabs and fire imps, and it has happened once with the fire crabs and twice with the fire imps. I am aware of fire snakes being vermin.

I think they will only fall through if they dodge onto the open tile durring combat. That's how mine fell, a fire imp came up. Maybe if you have too many dwarves standing around the forge they will step out of eachother's way onto the open tile, but that should be even rarer than falling in combat unless your magma workstations are on a fortress highway.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

You can build the grates elsewhere, down the tube.

Oh well yeah if I had planned ahead and funneled the lava from somewhere else rather than building it directly above the pool, that would have been fabulous. Unfortunately, I was under the impression that the magma facilities still had unpassable sections, so I did not do this. I regret it now.
