How Can I Build Musical Instruments?
I've tried searching for intruments and every intrument I can think of in the work order menu but I can't seem to find it. The DF wiki although not the latest version seems to suggest you can build them?

the instruments are randomly generated, and requires special components. Leatherworker and glass maker can both have some of the components, craftsdwarf some other etc. Try looking for what you can make at a carpenter or by woodcrafter and you will probably find something.

Music instruments in dwarf fortress have random names and instruments for each world you play, so looking for real world instrument names won't help. I'm not sure where to find it in the steam version, but the free version had a sub menu inside some workshops for music instruments

Some instruments can be crafted one off in the craft workshops. But some of the larger ones need to have their components build and then assembled in a crafting workshop.
As the previous poster noted some components can only be crafted in certain workshops. So you get to look through all the types of workshops to find each component to a certain instrument. Get them built, assemble everything in a craft workshop and then the instrument can be installed. It's a tedious process for sure.

I really like this system a lot, but I can see people hating that it's hard to see exactly what every instrument needs in order to be made.

Basically what I do is 1) buy instruments and instrument parts randomly from caravans, and/or 2) sometimes randomly make components at random workshops until hopefully I get the parts needed for an instrument eventually.

I'm pretty sure the final instruments are all made at the crafts workshop? Using the instrument parts you have in stock.

I just buy them, can't be arsed.
At least I used to while the trade window still made sense, before having 1000000 unfiltered bins.

The instruments that are made in a single piece can be at any of the Craftdwarf workshop, Metalcrafting, Glassworker, Kiln, and possibly more. There isn't much more you can do than look through all the workshops to see what you can make.

The instruments that need to be assembled are always assembled at the Craftwdarf workshop. You can see all their names in the submenu for assembling instruments at the workshop. Take note of their names, then you can find all the parts needed by searching in the Orders menu.

OK thank you, I've found them. I think I'll have to wait though as I don't have a working glass or leather industry yet (damn the lack of sand on my embark!) and they all seem to require at least one piece from them

1. Check the Make Instrument option in the craftsworkshop. (Here you'll find all instruments. The ones with Make in front can be built directly. Assemble means you'll need several parts which are build in different workshops.)
2. Start a new work order and enter a name (or part of it) of an instrument. All needed parts are listed and you can just order them.
3. When all parts a created, assemble the instrument at the craftworkshop.

most time you complete all instruments at craftdwarf there you can see the name of missing instrument parts now at bottom on nomral screen to to the manager tab and order to build that instrument part you dont have to choose a crafting station that does the manager.

My suggestion: 1; go to craftsdwarfs workshop. 2; look at an instrument name. 3; go to work-orders. 4; input instrument name in search bar. 5; make a work order for every item with that instrument name and one for the assembly of that instrument.

pay attention to the job cancellations and make sure to make whatever they say you don't have enough of, again use the work-orders menu, if you don't have the work-orders menu assign a manager in the nobles menu.
