Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

dwarfs refuse to pick up a pickaxe
6 pickaxes available, plenty of dig orders, mining labor is set on these dwarfs, they have skill in it, they can access the dig locations, they simply refuse to pick up the picks and get to work, ive tried reassigning their labors, ive tried restarting, ive tried forcing them only to do mining, ive tried forbidding and unforbidding the pickaxes, ive tried making them mine just random ♥♥♥♥ nearby to see if they "somehow" detect that region as unaccessible

this is the first time in 10 colonies ive had them just outright refuse to dig, what the ♥♥♥♥ game

closer inspection, no dwarf will equip ANY tools, and before you ask, no i dont have a millitary so its not the uniforms thing either

The usual issue here is that the miners are also assigned to woodcutting, but also there's a bug if you have large gathering zones, that every dwarf's brain breaks and they forget how to do anything.

i have done neither of these, and now its every dwarf meant to use tools just refuses, no one is sharing wood cutters roles (ive never done that anyway)
and i dont have ANY gathering zones

check they dont need to traverse a ramp, ive had a bug i have yet to re-create but my dwarfs point blank refused to use a ramp to get to a storage area

ive tried places with, and without ramps
ive tried just about every single way they could use these picks or axes, not a single thing changes their retardation
ive tried across a bridge, not across a bridge, channeling, digging, destroy ramps, it doesnt matter, these short hairy men dont care

if i have to remake the world im honestly just gonna quit, im fine abandoning and restarting forts but not for "sorry the games code has decided to have the dwarfs become braindead the first minute you hit unpause"

i will add, this is the only time i tried reclaiming an abandoned fort, if thats why they've refused to mine, i dont even know how to express my feelings on that

a new finding, they wont deconstruct anything either

are you sure you have a manager appointed?

you dont need a manager for them to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DIG given you might, just might need to dig before ever attempting to get one, but infact, i do actually have one, and they will approve orders for workshops, hauling works, building works assuming i have materials onhand, planting and gathering still works

new findings, they will deconstruct stuff like workshops, they WILL NOT deconstruct walls stairs, ramps, etc

I had similar problems, and it was because of a burrow.
Even if things were in the burrow.

Otherwise, the labor isn't set to "only selected dwarfs do it"? Did you try to put a dwarf as "selected tasks only" (in case they have way too many other tasks to do)?
Otherwise no idea

In the Labors page, for the Minors, could "Nobody does this job" accidentally be selected? Just throwing out things to check that haven't been mentioned yet.

i dont use burrows, ive yet to ever try them out, i can...sorta? see the use, especially for some higher end colonies , but i personally distrust these lugs to follow rules so i havent ♥♥♥♥♥♥ with it

nope, woodcutter and miner are set to the default of "selected do this" and they are infact selected to do that

doesnt explain deconstruction of walls breaking either

Usually you can see the reason of why they cancelled a task in the red forbidden icon notification up left, maybe this can help you debug it

its not being canceled, its just being ignored, the miners wont even equip pickaxes as part of their "uniform" like they have all other 10 times ive had colonies

if it was being canceled, id have said that

Then absolutely no idea

If they are only either miner or woodcutter (not both)
not in the military
the labor is set to selected only
no burrow
you tried to set a dwarf to "only do selected tasks" so they won't try to haul hundreds of rocks or whatever
that's probably a bug to be reported
