Should i immediately build a farm on the cavern layer?
How tf does the new cavern soil mechanic even work? Once you pierce through the cavern, cave fungus spreads to all of your underground sand/dirt/clay and marks them as "cavern floors". Is the soil richness determined by cavern level? The thickness of cave fungus? Z-level? Could I just wait until my upper farms are covered in cave fungus, or should I immediately build a farm in the caverns to maximize plant production?

you can still mark sand and clay through fungus.
From what i'm experiencing right now, you can't make a farm on stone with fungus. Mud is the key requirement for stone. If you find soil like sand in the cave though, you can just go ahead and farm. Wall off the area if all your doing is farming. saves on pathing.

The fungus is cool though cause you got food and drink year round.

I want to know this as well, what is "cavern soil"

Once you reach a certain level of expertise you can start every fort by rushing the caverns, walling off a chunk of floor and starting your farms there. No need to worry about embark conditions and you get high yields from the jump. The catch is without proper embark items and careful play you'll just get jumped by antmen and giant olms.

What items do you recommend for future rush carven dwelers?

Avoid Pete layers. You can't smooth them and crops don't grow well there.

Something I don't quite understand (and the wiki doesn't explain yet), what counts as "rich soil"? Farm plots made underground in the surface soil layers now have lesser yields, and the game says you should plants crops down in the caverns instead.

What I want to know is if you have to use the existing cavern mud surfaces to build your farm plots, or is it related to elevation? Could I dig out and muddy a room at the same z-level as the natural caverns and still create farms with rich soil?
