How do you make cage traps work?

Cant seem to figure this out

You build them in place and let an enemy or animal get caught in them. What did you try, and how did it fail?

Do you have empty cages in your stockpile? They need to load the trap with a cage which will capture a creature that walks into it. It will then be taken to the stockpile with the creature still inside and you'll have to reload the trap with a new, empty cage.

so how do you load it? I have a bunch of cages avaiable

Once you setup the trap, dwarves will move the mechanism and the cage to it automatically, usually

The graphics will be just a rectangle with some dark circles all around it. The cage only appears if someone triggers the trap

You need to make mechanisms, Mechanic workshop.

If you click it, it should say what kind of cage it's loaded with.
