Dwarf Fortress

Jod! Dec 18, 2022 @ 7:20am
My cook decided to make a meal from forgotten beast meat...
Now I have a masterwork stack of 578 pig's milk roast on the floor of my kitchen and it doesn't fit into any barrel. Does it spoil? Are my dwarves going to be ok??? O_o

It will spoil without a barrel, you need to build some barrels quick! As for eating it, your dwarves will be fine as long as you pack it in tight in some barrels.

just spam barrel crafting, make an temporary extra carpenter and do idk 100 barrels, you can sell them after.

I have over 100 free pots/barrels. They didn't want to put the forgotten beast meat stacks in there either, so i was kind of worried it would spoil but it was in an enclosed room and i was hoping it would just stay there. Now the 578 roasts are on my kitchen floor near the tavern and i'm anxiously watching them eat it one by one.

I think his problem is that the dwarves won't split a stack to place in different barrels, and 578 is more than a, barrel can hold. I'm not really sure how big a stack a barrel can hold, to be honest

Yes, that is what I think has happened. It's down to 566 roasts now so I hope they will eat at least half of it before it spoils and sends my cook into murderous rage from hundreds of destroyed masterworks...

Ah, I see. Is it the case that if he makes a stockpile for just prepared meals, and lowers the barrel count so that there is space for just the stack without the barrel, then it won't spoil in the stockpile?

Maybe make a stockpile over it for prepared food. Iirc it doesn't go bad in stockpiles, or at least lasts a lot longer

Yeah, I think prepared meals in a food stockpile don't spoil, even if they aren't in barrels, but I could be mistaken

Edit: I just confirmed this. Excerpt from the wiki: "The only places where food will not rot are: in a stockpile, a trade depot, the embark wagon, a minecart, when used as a reaction component, or while being carried by a dwarf, caravan pack animal, or wagon. Additionally, eggs will not rot in a nest box. It does not matter if the food is in a container; a barrel or large pot full of meat left in a corridor will rot. While you'd expect milk, fat, and tallow to rot also, it seems that they do not, nor do any of the other categories of food, including flour, drinks, seeds, and rock nut paste. Raw fish will rot no matter where they're stored, which is why it's important to prepare fish as quickly as possible."

Wait. I think it is in the tiny prepared food stockpile that I have next to my kitchen. Will it be safe without being in a barrel?

I'm not sure, but I remember it being a point that people would lower their barrel count in a prepared meal stockpile for just this reason (so there would be room for large stacks that won't fit in barrels). It wasn't something I ever really worried about because the large stacks weren't something that would happen that often naturally, but I think it being stored in a stockpile will keep it from rotting or at least slow the process down, even without a barrel.

Oof. I'm hoping I'm safe then. The "your cook created 578 masterpieces" announcement got me scared a bit. Happened right after I killed the third fleshy forgotten beast that wandered into my caves and forgot the butcher and kitchen were put on auto.

I'm replying to this since you seemed to have missed it due to me editing the message, but at least in the free version and according to the wiki, being in a barrel doesn't matter, as long as it's in an appropriate stockpile

Ok. I think I'm good then. They ate over 100 roasts and it didn't spoil yet.

The wiki is MOSTLY right, as food left out of barrels/pots will attract flies and vermin and they will cause rot in the food even in a stockpile. Any stockpile underground will not attract flies but will attract vermin, but if you have cats then they take care of the vermin for you.

Curious how you got them to cook the roast? I still have yet to cook anything larger than a 20 stack roast and they wont touch anything that makes it go higher.
