tame animals
been playing around with the animal cages, anything I can do with tame rats aside from selling them? and if so whats the point of taming them?

Well, rats are vermin. I dunno the answer to "Why train vermin"

But by taming normal animals, you can obtain a breeding pair, and domesticate them. Note that the parents of exotic creatures will only be 'partially tame', and only through breeding multiple generation can they become fully domesticated.

This is very useful for exotic cave animals; because they are often large, have extremely valuable bones and hides. Dralthas especially.

Not only that but if you have dralthas all over your fort and invaders get in, they'll tear them to shreds.

The coveted breeding pair is the Giant Cave Spiders.

Some dwarfs like rats and will take them as pets but that's as far as tame small animals go I think.

Actually, I remembered that some you can milk like the purring maggot or the creepy crawlers can be butchered iirc.
