Drinkable water in an ocean embark?
How do you get it? Is there a way? Lets pretend I haven't found an aquifer at all, because I haven't despite digging down like crazy. There's only a few pockets of water around the fort. I don't know how to build a well at all for the hospital which is why I haven't built a hospital yet.

I only have access to magma.

Is my only way to get drinkable water to dig into the caverns?

Pumping the water through a screw pump will filter out the salt. Make sure it does not contact salt water afterwards

Guess I'll need to learn how pumps work finally. The ocean floor and my dwarves are quite far away. I'd imagine I'm going to need hundreds of pipe sections for this.

Dig a channel almost to the ocean, put the pump inline (check the wiki for the exact mechanics), dig the cistern on the output side of the pump, then dig the final square to the ocean once everything else is in place. You don't need to build a pipeline out of pipe sections or anything, just regular digging. For bonus points, rig the pump to a windmill or waterwheel to save your dwarves' poor little arms.

Isn't the real answer "Where is the ale?"

Aye, but sick dwarves aren't "fed" ale. Water is for sick ones in the hospital. I plan on digging greedily deep once I have a good army and I expect a lot of casualties.

Also need a pool of water nearby so my dwarves can clean themselves from all the clay they keep smearing themselves with.

It's so strange I haven't seen a tutorial video on this and despite giving a good description I'm not sure what you mean by "cistern on the output side of the pump", but again I have to learn how pumps work. Usually left them for much later in the classic version of the game.

However if what you said about pumps filtering salt out of the water that's all I need to know. I'm just going to pump the water up multiple Z levels to create a pool of water that is drinkable. Going to take some desinging.

I've always wanted to create a waterfall inside a fort. Not one of those mist generators but a real waterfall.
