No, I've never tried stopping an aquifer by smoothing it. I don't think that works

works for my top area but as soon as I dig one down, one room produces water, even though it's smoothed

left portion is the "cellar", right the top area

Aquifers will drip from the ceiling too, smoothing only stops the block that is smoothed from leaking. If your lower room is bigger than your upper room, you can still have leaks.

Also if you have multiple layers of aquifer, you have to get rid of all of them. If you dig out a lower layer the ceiling will leak even if you smooth the walls.

Basically you don't want to build in or directly below aquifers unless you have to. It's possible but it creates problems that you might not see right away. Normally you just build a stairwell that is the same diameter through the aquifer so it doesn't leak, then start building one more level below where it ends.

I havent tried it but I wonder if you smooth the floor above if the ceiling stops leaking.

Floors don't leak fortunately, whole blocks do. If you have aquifer blocks hanging over open space, they leak. If you can smooth the floor then the block is already mined out and considered gone.

I would recommend never building on an aquifer level, just penetrate them and build beneath them. And as you penetrate the aquifer levels, make sure you dig the same shape out every level so that you don't leave an open aquifer block above an open space or it'll drip down.

Also you can still save this fort by making a drain or two in the worst area and don't dig out any more aquifer. Light aquifers are slow enough to leave them open if you have a large drain area (really big room somewhere lower)

Orrrr... make the floors the same shape, but that might suck.

I will mine out the top level, and if this doesn't stop it I will mine the floor and blank it

Btw if you make a drain, it has to not be in the aquifer. That just makes more water. Just so you know.

(this doesn't not count for heavy aquifers)

Yes I'm only in a light one and digging out the top solved it <3

Ah, that explains how I drowned my one colony digging out a farm in light aquifer layers

Well I learned something today!

Did you forget about it and as you realized what his happening it was already too deep in water?

I have had this happen too. If it's a small room or you hit a heavy aquifer you have a ton of unintended fun. I mean as soon as the water is 2 of 7 it can become very hard or impossible to salvage. Which is why one of my previous bedrooms is locked and flooded to the ceiling.

yep. This works.
Ok so. Aquifer. If it's a solid "wall" and not an open space or floor will leak at a rate to open space in the 4 cardinal blocks at the Z level and the open space directly below. To remove the aquifer, remove the block. In order to smooth the block above you would have to dig the block above. And smoothing it prevents it from leaking.
