After installing, every coffin needs a tomb zone designation. one zone for each coffin.
You can also make individual rooms for the coffins (2 tile hole with a door and coffin) and use the multi room option.
Even then sometimes the dwarves just don't show any urgency in burying them.
Unrelated, but on that note do you happen to know if archery targets are having a similar, obnoxious issue?
No idea honestly, still learning myself.
I had just been putting them into a barracks with an archery squad training in it and assumed it was good lol.
Archery targets used to be like that even in the free version. You have to setup a training area for each one of them individually. I don't know if that was changed in the steam version, but that's how it used to be in the free version
You can literally place the coffins in an empty room and click a tomb zone on each of them, the walls and doors makes it easier and from what I've read the dwarves like fancy tombs more but not 100% on that.
Now you need tombs that work like bedrooms for dwarves, and will be assigned after they die, it's just more convoluted, as the previous system did the exact same thing without having to designate tomb zones
Edit: in the past you could just place coffins anywhere in the fort without designating any zones and dwarves and pets would get buried in them. You could even randomly place them in the middle of hallways or wherever, it didn't matter
i place tombs for each other coffins, and i appinted tomb for pets, but...
They really went out of their way to make this as awkward and annoying as possible...
