Windmill power from outside to inside of fort

Hello,

Is there a way to block off passage and let a gear trough? Like a wall with a hole in it for just the rod for example?

I believe windmills can transmit though a floor if the floor is directly touching it and a gear.
Otherwise, and you likely should do this anyways, surround the windmill in a wall so attackers don't bother it. (And add a lip of floors so climbers can't use wall.)

better if you have a river nearby build a channel into your mountain secure it with metal bars and use waterwheels they only use 3 blocks and you can stack them in a row.

Some wise designations and careful prep and you can use an aquifer to power your every need.

You can technically even have a water wheel power itself through a pump feeding back to it's channel...

Tried that and it didn't seem to work.

Surrounding the windmill with a wall is indeed probably the best way but does it stop the wind?

Use aquifer to make some water and have pump feed water back to wheels. Have floodgate or door with preferably diagonal connection feed waterwheel room but do not fill it completely or wheels do not work.
