Plump Helmets & Pig Tails
For some reason I cannot figure out why I'm constantly out of Plump Helmet and Pig Tail seeds. I've double checked to make sure they're not being cooked, they are not.

I seem to never have any pig tails and brewing brinks has become a problem. Any suggestions?

Embark with more
buy them when you can
scavenge from cavern layers
only employ specialized farmers instead of letting everyone farm because they use less seeds that way
farm in the caverns because soil wastes more seeds now
fertilize
top-soil farm and gather aboveground to have a wider variety.

Etc etc etc

Turn them off for cooking, I'd also recommend turing drinks and cooking for pig tails and use for cloth.

I also heard there is a bug with barrels so have a seed pile with no barrels.

Check your still and farmer shop for the seeds. Often they don't get hauled and once the shop is clogged enough they don't register as available for hauling. If they are there in the shop's internal, deconstruct the shop and that will free them up. Make sure there's a linked stockpile to pull them from the shop. That mostly works.

Don't use barrels in your seed stockroom. The game will store them in bags instead. You will also need quite a few bags, make them in the tailor workshop using Cloth. Pigtails need to be processed in the Farmers Workshop to make thread and produce the Pig Tail seeds . Use the loom workshop to make cloth from the thread.

Thanks everyone!

Also get a cat pastured in your plants stockpile, so that it can hunt vermin. Vermin like hamsters can eat your food, so maybe you are losing some to that.

“Only Farmers harvest” is a really good option to pick. You can plant one seed and later harvest up to five shrooms, but only if the harvester has skill. (And apparently the soil type matters as well, which is a nice touch.) Once you have that 5× multiplication going you will never, ever run out of seeds. You will run out of places to put seeds instead. :)

Some really good advice, logical stuff... just never thought the game was that detailed.

I thought the yield was determined by the planter's skill, not the harvester's

Maybe? You make me doubt my memory.

I had to double check, but yeah, it's the planter's skill that matters. However, if you restrict the harvesting to the grower only, they'll level up quicker.

Yea, you’re right. You do it so that your grower(s) gain exp in the growing skill more quickly, and thus plant more efficiently. Thanks for correcting me!

Thanks for motivating me to double check and refresh my memory 😅. I might restrict harvesting to planters because of this thread!
