Dwarf Fortress

Miners wont use pickaxes
So I dont know when this started, but the problem is this.

My miners one day decided to drop the pickaxes and stop mining, except the stone carving jobs I gave them, and they only do that.

They are constantly praying, meditating, socializing, reading, etc... and they dont pick up their tools!

I tried the following, and NOTHING worked.

- Take out the pick designation on my weapons stockpile.
- Form them in a military squad with picks for weapon.
- Set them to kill something then cancel, they dropped the tools and nobody picks up.
- Let them kill the creature, they put the pickaxes back into the stockpile.
- Take the miner job out of them, save and come back, set the job again.
- Give the miner work to another dwarves.
- etc...

Again, NOTHING worked.

####EDIT####

Things that DIDNT work too (before or tried moments ago)

- Set "Only selected do this" on the miners (got it since the very start of my fort)
- Make more pickaxes (did ten of iron and ten of copper)
- Erase the social zones (library, temple and dinning hall/tavern, in an attempt to stop social activities, thinking It was a loop bug)

###EDIT###

I might have an idea of why this happened.
Could It be because of the weapon stockpiles

Since picks classify as weapons, and weapons are exclusively for military, maybe the game thought since they are weapons now and not tools anymore, they cant use them.

No, I'm telling you to make more pickaxes. You need two per dwarf if you want to have your miners use pickaxes while in the military.

Make copper for your mining and steel for weapons.

Unless you are mining deep then maybe steel for mining to hopefully survive what dark secrets you have broken into by accident.

I tried that too before.
I have 5 miners, and 12 pickaxes.
2 of copper and 10 of iron (I didnt had copper at the time)

Do you think I need more than that or its the material
(my question mark key is broken sorry the missing letters)

Material shouldn't matter. You also should have enough pickaxes. Are they perhaps stored in bins? There seems to be some sort of bug with the contents of bins being sometimes inaccessible.

I've read your initial post again. It seems that the dwarves are rather maniacally doing 'on break' jobs. Is that issue also affecting your other dwarves, or only the miners? You said that if you assign them to a different job, they will do that job, just won't mine. What is their current mood? Have you tried changing the status of the mining job from 'only selected do this to 'nobody does this' or 'everybody does this' and see if anything changes?

The social activities (socializing, reading, praying) have two states. The normal one, and the obsessive one (denoted in classic by pink text with an exclamation mark). The normal one will be paused if there is a higher priority job, the manic one won't be paused for anything.

The Bins.
Yes, I have bins and the pickaxes are in bins.
But EVERYTHING ELSE, the dwarves can get them no problem.
Even when I put them on a military squad with pickaxes, they picked them up, then dropped on the floor and walked away.
I just checked, the pickaxes from that attempt are still outside, in the snow and in the entrace hallway.

About the "Only selected do this", yes, since the very begining I have my miners set ONLY to mine cause expansion and metal industry is top priority always.

ONLY the miners are affected, everybody else does their jobs always.

Mood: Happy. Bruh, even the pissed off ones always do their jobs no matter their mood.
IN FACT, It seems I have 7 really angry dwarves, but everytime I check them, they always have good memories and moments in their thoughts. Its as if the mood system is broken.

Social Activities. Always normal, no obssessions (not a single exclamation mark, except some guys sometimes, but they arent miners, and they do their jobs once they stop their social activity.)

I shall edit the post with stuff I tried before and now, and that didnt work.

Kick the miners from military squads, restrict them only to mining (no woodcutting either). See if they are not stuck in a burrow.

Miners, woodcutters and hunters conflict with military service.

Thats another thing in my strategy in DF.
Peasants ALWAYS GO MILITARY.
NO miner, NO crafters, NO farmers, NO ACTUAL WORKER! ONLY peasants.
Cause since they are complete zeroes at everything (some excpetions but still), might as well dedicate them entirely to military life.

To answer your suggetion, I never had miners, woodcutters or hunters as military.
