How do I grow my population?
Should I build more beds or expand the cave more?

Yeah, migration waves are dependant on two things.

Your exported wealth, and your safety rating. Safety rating is invisible, though.

If people die a bunch, less migrants will come. But you should build beds anyway in preparation.

You can attract migrants if you demonstrate your wealth through trade.

Thanks guys

Migrants are attracted by rumors of the wealth of your fort. Anything that creates wealth increases migration. You create wealth by crafting stuff, cutting gems, and engraving the walls and floors. Cooking also generates a lot of wealth as funny as that is.

20 pop feels like that starting net until the wealth check procs, then the flood gates open and waves of 10+ dwarves show up at any one time. Although my population has stabalized at around 200. Semi glad I havent gotten any more migrations besides the random person asking to reside in the mountain for entertainment.

I think the default cap is 200. I have a fort thats been stable there for quite a while and I have dug deep enough to start finding artifact armor and magma columns. The only time I get migrants now is when some dwarfs die and its never enough to push the population past 200.

200 is indeed the population cap. 220 is the strict cap for babies being born and such. You can adjust the caps in the game's settings.

I'm thinking about doing that...

Do you know if there's any specific "fulcrum point" that is hazardous there, aside from just the obvious increased CPU load? IOW - Is there a number there that kicks of a known problem with population outside of what should be expected in additional processing load? (Sometimes, games can have such issues if an ignorant player starts mucking around with settings.)

My old potato runs this pretty well for being a potato... (OLD i7, 8gig Ram, on an SDD, Win7Pro... (airgapped), does alright..) I'd like to see where it becomes a slideshow, though.
