Dwarf fortress is going to complete obsolete as a story generating game in about ~5 years time by AI Models.
Mark my words. There'll be a game that comes in the near future that'll absolutely blow DF out of the water by using large AI language models. At the moment technology like ChatGPT is already insanely impressive, but it'll get exponentially better at a really fast rate. Meanwhile DF is moving at a snail's pace and using tech that's bordering on 20 years old. When someone constraints a language model AI by some rules of a game like RimWorld or DwarfFortress, it's just going to be on another level to the point where DF will seem like an ant compared to an intelligent human being.

Yes, and you'll need a super computer to run it. Running AI, especialy a good AI, with a big model, like GPT, is very expensive, which is why everything since GPT 2 runs on the cloud.

Who knows, AI is getting pretty crazy already, technology can improve, a new CPU technology may be created without the current restrictions, and it might run in a device as small as a pendrive.

Who cares? Who ACTUALLY plays Dwarf Fortress as a story generator, let's be real. People who know what they're talking about don't actually call Dwarf Fortress a story generator, and 95% of people don't play it for that reason.

Dwarf Fortress is a cool game where I get to build stuff with little guys who don't always act like I want them to. I get to find things and watch fights. My little men go about their day. It's not a story generator, it's sea monkeys for nerds. And it's exactly what I want it to be.

Did you get sick of triggering artists on Twitter by mentioning AI or something lol.

People don't play Dwarf Fortress for AI-finessed prose, they play to watch naked dwarves beat each other to death with socks.

What does it matter? You can access it remotely by paying a monthly sub or based on usage.

It's expensive, but not ~that~ expensive. It's expensive to employ it for free as an addon to something like Google search which gets billion of queries a day. A monthly subscription would be required for a game.

I don't think anybody would like to have an advanced AI here. The old-school, dungeon crawling, random and whacky approach to gameplay and story is part of the charm here.

Yes, and now they'll be able to also strangle each other with socks. Or fill them with rocks and use them as a flail. Or fill them with bees and throw them into a room.

What AI tech bros haven't realized is that companies are going to sieze your AI models, and monetize them to the high heavens. It will happen to every AI model you enjoy. It has ALREADY happened with AI dungeon, which now gives you like 15 posts unless you pay a subscription.

A new AI model will appear, someone like Adobe or some other Globocorp will sweep in and monetize it from out of the reach of the common man.

Welcome to capitalism.

Enjoy your stay.

Is that how markets work? You get rich by pricing your product so high that it's beyond the reach of 99% of your potential customer base? Seems very viable. (Spoiler: no.)

Also, paying 15 bucks monthly for AI Dungeon or $0.0200 per 1000 tokens for GPT-3 Davinci is hardly out of the reach of anyone.

It shouldn't come to you as a surprise that hosting a very compute-intensive service can't be offered for free.

Ok and? I don't mind paying even 300$ a month for a useful AI.

I do hope that governments will regulate the accessibility and deem it as a human-right and subsidize it, but governments kind of suck ♥♥♥♥ at the moment.
