How to use the Still?

I want to give my dwarfs beer, spirits and ale etc etc but I have no idea how to make alcohol. The only option available to me is to extract from plants and then it denies me doing this. It says it needs an empty glass flask. Where do I get empty glass flasks? Lots of functioning alcoholics working for me.... they need there booze otherwise they get unhappy.

"extract" doesn't make booze, you don't have any brewable plants or fruits or those options would be available. You could try gathering plants (or harvesting fruit trees if you have stepladders) to get things to brew. For a regular supply, you will get a farm going.

I have a large square of gathering around my wagon so am picking alot of different stuff. I have farms but what are the plants associated with alcohol?

For underground crops plump helmets and cave wheat can both make booze

Also sweet pods and pig tails. Just make sure to *brew drink from plants* for these. Some things like grapes and berries need *brew drink from fruit*. It wont come up as a task on the still unless you have some plants you can brew from.

Look in the labor menu and then the kitchen tab and it will show you what all is being used for cooking and brewing in your fort. There you can adjust what the ingredients are used for.

May be a good idea starting out to only use some items such as Plump Helmets for brewing as doing so will return spawn for further planting instead of being consumed in cooking.

yeah generally best to turn off cooking for plump helmets altogether to build up seeds in the beginning.

I reckon this game is missing an inbuilt in depth encyclopedia or detailed tool tips. You should be able to hover your mouse over and item and it gives you a blurb about what it does. Half the time I have no idea what each of the items are.
