Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

dwarves won't train
hi everyone

i started a couple of runs already, so i have the basics down about routines, alert levels etc.
now, i have a new colony, almost 25 dwarves rn, and my military won't train.

i set up equipment for them, i have barracks with both dormitory, meeting area and shooting range, the barracks are associated with my squad and all options about training, rest and so on are enabled.
i have a squad of 2 dwarves(i know it's not much but at least it's something). i set up the alert to constant training, but it's been almost 1.5 years and i haven't seen them training a single time. all they do is rest, pray, drink, or when they aren't doing it they are just "no activity". i even tried to give them couple of missions like "guard this spot" ecc, they do it. but the moment i tell them to train again they won't do a thing.

how do i make them train?

you need to individually assing them ( red circle halved with red line) or look into it if it's set to 10 dwarfs at least per squad before training.

I did that too, both tried to select the squad from the squad menù and addign "train", i tried editing the orders from the schedule and both making them do training by selecting them or placing a "at least 10" training order. None worked. I disbanded e redid the squads, changed members but nothing.. I deleted the colony

When you look at the squad sidebar, hotkey q. Does the middle say training in green?
So
squad name
train (in green)
constant training

In order to train your dwarves well, you need some stuff.
Barracks, assigned to their squad, with training enabled for the barracks.
Enough space in the barracks for them to train.
Enough idle soldiers to train. For this reason, the preferred number to have the squad set to train is not 10 or near max of soldiers, it's 2-4. This way, if any dwarves are drinking, eating, or sleeping, the ones that aren't busy will be training. You need at least 2 dwarves to train and 2 is usually a good number to have squad training set to.
I too have the same issue in my latest run! Just cant get them to train! In a previous fortress I was successful with much smaller barracks, yet this time I just cant get the 5 dwarves (2 of which are mercenarian macedwarves) to train at all! It's driving me nuts trying to figure out what to do!
