Why is my militia not equipping gear?
I build like 3394893493490339048 steel armors, grieves and leather armor etc and half of the idiots wont equip? Sometimes when I reassign them armor some equip but then the others just say "nah i dont want this anymore" so now more of the idiots are not equipped. Please help!

Is it red or yellow symbol on their equipment status? If its yellow they already claimed a piece of gear they just take awhile to go pick it up and put it on sometimes, if its red then there's no valid gear for them to wear.

Its red, and I sat there for like 20 min making gear (metal and leather) for their red needs. They never picked it up or the icon turn yellow.

is the gear in stock or left on floor somewhere? it does not count if its not in armor stockpile :3 other thing.... you sure the uniform has same material for metal as the armors?
I have the same problem. Half of my melee squad won't equip the armor that is readily available. Half of my archer squad refuse to bring bolts with their crossbows. Half of the both squads refuse to even show up at a single "move to" point despite direct orders. Seems like the challenge of this game is how utterly broken many of the internal processes are and the more you play, the more broken things get.

The gear was made for their matching uniform needs, like metal dwarfs, i made metal armor, crossbow dwarfs i made leather. The make it and its placed in a stockpile. They do not drop on floor.

THANK YOU ITS FRUSTRATING AS HELL!

Check your stocks on the top of the screen to see how many you actually have I guess, I've seen some weird stuff with dwarves claiming but not equipping gear but never just not claiming gear that's available, it's user error or a really rare bug. Could also try remaking the squad from scratch.

You have to assign it. Yellow is equipping, red is not assigned/available, green is wearing. I think. Something like that. The "..." means it's in the process of putting it on usually.

You have to learn to use that screen. It's simple enough.

FYI there's ways to get them to place armor in the barracks chest, armor stands, etc. Another part you have to learn. The wiki is invaluable.

I have to manually equip them the missing armor (red) WTF why even have an auto uniform option if its broken? And yes I understand the yellow means they are equipping. The wiki is out of date but I still use it.

My military had its first stress test today - a goblin siege. I had three squads of what I thought were reasonably trained, well equipped soldiers. In their finest hour, when called up to duty after YEARS of training/simulation, about 9 of the 16 troops decided to show up - despite ample time to gather in front of my base. Several of them forgot to put their pants on that morning and figured they'd YOLO it with no armor. Only one of my archers decided it would be a good idea to bring bolts along with the crossbow (the other three prefer using crossbow as a melee bashing tool, apparently). The two things that saved me from a complete massacre were the 5 war dogs loitering around my front entrance, and how the goblins charged in a piecemeal fashion. I guess I have to laugh at the whole thing though, despite the frustration.

Bahaha thats some good stuff. I'm really loving the game but I feel like things still need to be ironed out. I just have this bug where I cant mine anything on a specific floor. I can mine above and below, but no one will mine on the that floor, and yes I checked burrows. Was a 15 year old fort, defeated some black mass boss thingy, troll, giant and massacred 1000s of gobs, guess ill retire and run a new fortress. Gonna miss that place. RIP Cloverhammers.

try forbidding some of the gear that's showing as being equipped and see if it fixes it. For shoes and boots sometimes they won't equip it if they have regular clothing shoes on.

That is another quirky thing with armor, with how layering works shoes get in the way of dwarves putting on boots for some reason, the only way I've gotten dwarves to consistently put on their high boots is to set them to only wear their uniform instead of wearing it over their clothes.

that worked half way. Now only half are not equipping boots and gloves. Oh well. Thanks for the help everyone. Gonna Strike the earth on a new map.
