but if you retire your fortress, the dwarfs you left behind will carry on without you, having kids, and maybe exploring more of the island.
that way, you get to play a new fortress, but kinda keep the old one going. later you may even decide to make another fortress on the island so the decedents of your first fort will visit you to trade, or maybe even join you
