Think that is for everyone, basically macros are just for digging right now. At least that is by far their best use. People are also using a macro to get "close" to a 1-step tick in time, seeing as that also is currently not in game.
Just kidding, I am not a vim user but was also interested on doing this, and building a set of blueprints for our things and rooms etc.
I guess we must wait, although I read this article in the dwarf fortress wiki and if I understand properly they are talking as if what we need was already working, what do you think?

Yeah, macros were working great - in the classic version. This wiki page claims it's for v50.04, but that's completely wrong. Most stuff you could do with macros earlier is currently not possible because of the "reset cursor to center" bug, and because hotkeys got removed.
