There were people who wanted to work on it but if they ever responded afterwards, they were like "Well, it will take a lot of time due to multiplied tiles." (more than 5000 as of now) - most of them were never seen again.
It is a large undertaking since the way tilesets work changed quite a bit and the amount of sprites increased significantly.
You can always check on the subforum for them on bay12 forums but it doesn't seem to have changed since I last checked:

Of course it doesn't help that some of the popular tilesets had been mostly untouched for many years.
Phoebus for example didn't log in since 2016, IronHand has logged but didn't post since 2021...
Of course, you could always try to take it into your own hands to update the tileset you like, but given the lack of progress on that front from others it seems to be a rather large undertaking sadly.
I personally like the tileset we get on steam, but it is true that some of these older tilesets also has some unique flavour to them so it would be nice if they got updated at some point, but I'm not holding my breath for it.
I don't want them "updated" I just want the current graphics replaced with a 2D tileset from the legacy dwarf fortress into the steam edition. For now, I suppose ASCII will have to do. I just really feel the aesthetic of DF I was used to. The new graphics really take away any imagination, and while I do like ASCII and custom ASCII sets. The 2D full graphical tilesets was even better in my opinion than what DF currently has. I know 99% of the community disagreed about this long ago, I am just pretty sad that seems like the old DF just died with the release of the steam edition.
Also, just to make sure there is no misunderstanding, the tilesets were never part of the game, they were made by artists and modders, then included in most third party launchers.
His take is (and I can absolutely relate to this) that one:
The old version only had ASCII.
For people who don't like the ASCII approach (due to various reasons), people created tilesets that were more pleasing to the eye, but which wouldn't take away the imagination-potential ASCII provides.
Now, though, you only have the ASCII approach (not pleasing to the eye for some people) and the graphics which cut on imagination (if they look good or not isn't part of the problem, as beauty is subjective).
That's the regular "book is better than movie"-phenomena.
I can definitely relate as well, even if I don't necessarily want it myself (I was using the more detailed ones even in older versions as well).
After all, there were plenty "ascii +" type tilesets that made it easier to understand what everything was while keeping things basic enough to have the imagination fill the rest.
They were great for people that liked to read the details about everything.
