Tips for military uniforms?...
Hi all
I am struggling with 2 issues relating to the uniforms of my military squads.

1. If you assign "metal armour" to a squad, for some reason they will assign themselves, but will not EQUIP metal boots. I admit that most of my dwarves are wearing leather shoes, which I understand might be considered armour?..
If I set the option "uniform replaces armour" this seems to override the footwear issue, however, a new problem arises- unless I have the dwarves set to "ready" when not training or actively stationed, they go around naked, and get bad thoughts.

2. I have multiple squads, and military dwarves seem to 'claim' or 'share' weapons/armour from other squads. So that when you look at the uniform of the squad, there are many yellow items (meaning, I own an item, but I do not currently have it equipped).
This becomes a major issue when more than one squad needs to be deployed, and they go into battle with only half their armour equipped, or no weapon etc.

For starters, asign the metal armour to a dwarf/squad, set "armor replaces uniform" (perhaps "exact match" as well) and save it as a new uniform.
That way you will be able to asign the uniform with the option toggled instead of having to toggle it every time.
Once it is saved as a new uniform, you can apply that uniform to the whole squad.

Note that it can be a good idea for the whole squad to have the same weapon type instead of letting them grab anything, in that case you can also include that in the uniform if you want.

You then go into the schedule and decide how you want them to train (there are a few basic ones by default but you can create new ones if you want as well).
Once you decided on what schedule you want to use and activated it for the squad, you want to edit it and toggle "always equip", that way they will keep their weapon and armour all the time.
Unless their civilian job includes mining, woodcutting or hunting because those have their own "uniform" that conflicts with military uniforms (and usually you excluse those dwarves from the military as a result even if legendary miners can make some deadly soldiers).

When you know you have enough stuff for all of the military dwarves, you can force a refresh of what is claimed and equipped by setting the uniform again on the dwarf or squad(s).

I use to play Dwarf Fortress about 7 years ago, but forgot the solutions for keeping dwarfs properly equipped. None of the dwarfs are assigned to mining, woodcutting or hunting. I have the dwarfs assigned to a barracks for training and they do individual training sessions.
I have one problem:

1. The Markdwarves pickup their quiver which shows green... I see the order for picking up bolts goes red yet they NEVER pickup the bolts I have crafted. The bolts are literally lying on the ground next to the main stairway everyone is using, but the red sign for picking up bolts never goes green. Even crafting new bolts does not help. I haven't setup an archery range yet, but I don't think that should be necessary for them to merely place bolts into their quiver.

Is their a good YouTube video for only Markdwarves ?? I read the wiki yet that has not helped.

common bug about the markdwarves the bolts are equipment are busted and the dev are trying to find the source of the problem in the code

If you changed the uniform of your marksdwarves, there seems to be a bug where only bolts crafted after the change are recognized.
I have no clue why, but if the bolts are not in bins (which can cause issues as well) then it tends to be a big candidate on why your marksdwarves are not getting their ammo.

Make sure they have a crossbow by the way, because if for whatever reason they equip a bow then they will need arrows instead of bolts.

I haven't been using uniforms yet... just manually assigning exact weapons and armor. I can try switching to a uniform and see if that allows them to start using bolts ?

Try following exactly the steps I posted here:

The uniform for them has to exist before you make the squad, and the bolts must be created after the uniform. So:

1. Create a squad and a uniform with crossbows

2. Delete the squad

3. Create new squads and assign the uniform to them

4. Make bolts

Plus keep bolts out of bins.

1. This is a bug/oversight, these mods fix this.

2. Ensure that you have equipment available for all your squads. If you plan on making a new squad of 10 dwarves, queue up 10 sets of armour and weapons at the forge first.

What i do is i create 2 identical Uniforms that match the one i want them to wear.
The first one is temporary and has as settings "Uniform replaces clothings" that way the dwarves WILL EQUIP THE ASSIGNED BOOTS yet they will unequip their full civillian gear.

The second one is the "permanent" one it has as settings that the uniform is worn over clothing that way your dwarves will pick up any civilian gear they have and wear it except their shoes.

Remember that they will unquip their military shoes that you have assigned them when they go off duty and wont equip them again unless you first assign them to uniform 1 wait till they all have them on and then switch to uniform 2. I know it's a bit of micro but the boots don't make a huge difference for training and are only really important for fighting.
