Why the heck don't tilesets do what every other tileset in an ascii-based game does?

In most tileset-using ascii games, if an item, creature, or other object has undefined graphics, it defaults to the ascii characters. Here it doesn't though; creatures default to some weird creature (their corpses turning fully invisible)?

Just weird to have a best practice, that was in the way the game used to handle tilesets, and not use it in the full release. I'd much rather have a bunch of Ts when my Blue Tang Men entered the map, than a bunch of weird blobs creatures and invisible corpses.

I doubt any devs read the steam discussions, im mostly screeching into the void here, but if any do, is there a reason you chose this way, and a way I can convince you to look into changing it to a more modder-friendly practice? I do not want to have to commission someone to do sprites for me for my mod to be functional enough for release! D:

I don't know how the tilesets work in version 50+, but before that the tileset forcefully overwrote the ascii so it was all or nothing.
