Adventure mode versus fortress mode, which gamemode have you guys preferred?
I've always personally preferred adventure mode, can't wait for the rerelease.

adventure mode suffered heavily from lag when entering any place that was exciting, goblin pits just had way too many dudes and animals running around to play the game at all. i am hopeful that the multithreading support will make this better, since it helped me a lot in fortress mode

but I really want them to make targeted changes to fix the lag like reducing the number of creatures in goblin pits, or un-loading creatures when they are 20+ tiles away from you, especially when they are more than a full screen length away. just roughly calculating their position instead of keeping track of the entire creature and its actions every frame

to actually answer your question: both of them are super cool, I think adventure mode has always been pretty unpolished though, fortress mode has always been fun and the main mode for the game, for most people. it is a little unpolished too (spawning next to aggressive beasts and instantly dying on embark, catsplosions, loyalty cascades, took them a long time to fix military bugs) but its has way more features than adventure mode in the end. i would like to see more crafting and construction features in adventure mode, they have some basic stuff but its practically useless and cumbersome to do

i want to be able to go mining and craft my own axe and find more types of enemies to fight, like towns with guards so you cant just run around and kill people who dont even react to your murder. adventure mode works well for the basic "guy with armor and weapon who runs around and kills monsters for quests" but there is practically nothing else to do

Fort mode has always been the most interesting to me but in older versions I would jump into adventure mode every now and then for fun.
The start is often pretty similar and rather boring, until you get some equipment and perhaps a few decently skilled companions at least.

Fort mode for me as well. I've been playing games like ADOM and Mangband before, but adventure mode didn't really mesh with me for some reason.

I liked it because it let you explore your world entirely and experience it fully, kinda like daggerfall in a sense.

I played Daggerfall recently with the release of DFU 1.0. I like the game mechanics but I don't feel good about the world being big because it's all a copy of the same things with nearly zero practical differences, sometimes buildings look different I guess. You even fast travel across the huge map instantly with very little cost, and there's not much reason to travel the slow way because it's EXTREMELY slow, taking 15+ real minutes to get anywhere with nothing interesting on the way at all.

DF is a bit better with these things, especially if you generate a really small world so you can actually remember things and stick around long enough to learn about them. The travel is interesting, as you can train skills on wildlife or just survive in the wild as you hunt for food and find water sources to drink from

I know it's not the default game but Daggerfall Unity letting you use mods has some pretty cool travel mods that totally change that up. It's one of the best parts of the unity version.
