Seeds get stuck in brewery
I've had a reoccurring issue recently where each save I do every single seed seems to get stuck in the brewery after drinks have been made. I have plenty of haulers idle, plenty of free bags and barrels for storage and no matter what I do the seeds seem to get stuck there.

Am I missing something here? I'm new to the game so it's possible I'm just stupid, but I've tried to look around with some google-fu just in case and still can't get them to empty the seeds properly. Eventually my fort "runs out of seeds" because they're all stuck in the brewery haha.

Is your still linked to any stockpile?

What are your seed stockpile settings?

I saw an ugly chain of words in there...

What you want for seeds is a separate stockpile just for them and prevent the use of barrels on it.
The reason being that a barrel can contain many seed bags that can contain many seeds, so most seed bags (and seeds) end up in the same barrel and get "stuck" because only one job can access the barrel at the same time.

This is probably a big part of what is causing the issue of seeds not being hauled to their stockpile.

That being said, even if seeds are not in a stockpile, they can be used just fine by planters unless you have something else causing issues.

Planters spamming cancel messages usually is not due to no longer having seeds but by having seeds in a barrel, meaning that access to all of the seeds inside is locked if anyone wants to take or put a seed in.
If you don't have any stockpile for seeds (and don't accept them in food stockpiles either of course) your planters will happily go to chairs and workshops when they need to plant seeds.
It's just easier to have a stockpile closer to the fields, but only if you don't allow barrels to be used in it.

As for barrels that already have seed bags in them, paint them for dumping, then once they are dumped claim them, they will then be emptied (dwarves dumping the contents).
Once that is done, mark the pile for "undumping" before claiming (otherwise the dwarves will throw individual seeds from the bags).

I had no idea seeds should not be stored in barrels (with their bags), I'll give it another try with no barrels allowed in my seed storage (I did store them entirely separate earlier as well).

My seed stockpile is/was set to allow any and all seeds for simplicitys sake. I also noticed I had the exact same issues on my farmers workshop with the seeds getting stuck. Hopefully disallowing barrels in my seed storage will do the trick.

Barrels and bins have the problem of only being accessible by one task at a time, so anything that fits in very few containers or that need to be accessed in large quantities at once should be kept out of containers.
Seeds and gems are the first type, bolts and blocks are the second type.

Most other items are fine with bins or barrels but things like armor can make the process of equipping a new squad take longer than expected as well.

fwiw, this bug appears to have been mitigated in v50

Well I just loaded up an earlier save and did just what you suggested, seed storage does not allow barrels and the brewery has access to all the needed storage piles and the seeds still won't get picked up by haulers. First I thought that it might be tied to there now being any free bags so I made a few more, now I have 10 empty bags and still no seeds get picked up from the brewery/farmers workshop. Haven't let it run long enough to see if the planter will pick seeds up directly from the workshops though..

Any more ideas?

That was in the update notes but I haven't noticed a difference myself and had issues with barrels and bins with those item types, so not quite certain what was changed.

Is the workshop linked to stockpiles perhaps?

Hmm try force dwarfs to interact with seeds to learn if they somehow bugged or not.

Try to designate group of those seeds as dump items and dump them to dump zone if they where moved there its fine just reclaim them if no seems like some kind bug atom smash it.

Having exactly the same issue here.
My still is linked to take from:
-A stockpile for pots
-A stockpile for brewable plants
My still is linked to give to:
-A stockpile of drinks

I've tried linking the still to take from bags, linking the still to give to the seeds stockpile, and linking the still to give to a bag stockpile, all with no success. The only thing that seems to have worked for retrieving the seeds at all was to delete all links on the workshop and allow the seeds directly into a bag+barrel stockpile.
Please grant me your wisdom...

You don't need to link your still to anything. Just because the option is there doesn't mean you have to use it on every workshop.

Yeah, I know. I just set up some links to make sure all my alcohol ends up in stone pots instead of barrels. Just wondering if there's some way it can work even while having the links on the still.
Fel Jan 28, 2024 @ 10:16am
Forbid, sell or destroy empty barrels, unless you want to use wooden barrels for another process of course.

Found a solution that satisfies me, but isn't as snazzy and efficient as I wanted originally. I deleted all "give to" links for the still, which fixed the problem of dwarves not taking the seeds. They still just take them to the nearest bags, then to the seeds stockpile near the farms, which steals bags from my mills, but it's manageable. Thanks for everyone's help!

Yes, that's how you are supposed to handle seeds.
