Sand desert, wasteland or badlands rarely get any rain, but it also means little to no vegetation (including trees), which is a bit obvious.
Not that you can't play there, caves will have underground trees and you can always get more from caravans (especially if you request it from the yearly liaison), but it does make things a bit harder at the start (for beds specifically since most things can be made from rocks and/or metal as well).
It can also mean that grazer animals could have trouble feeding themselves depending on the presence of grass or not (again, underground moss works but it takes time to grow and caverns are a bit dangerous).
Wiki page for all of the "desert" biomes listed above:

Another thing to note is that even in normal savagery there are a few dangerous beasts that can spawn like jaguars or leopards.
Alternatively, you can go for grassland biomes that have a bit more rain, possible dangerous wildlife as well but a lot more shrubs and trees.

For other biomes, you can also make underground entrances closer to the sides of the map, to gretaly limit the time spent outside, it tends to give better result with the whole unhappy with rain (as long as they don't go outside after that of course).
